NEW Tunze 9004 Skimmer- Unboxing and Initial Review

Thanks Roger that's more comforting to know.
I had to remove the magnets to install the extender, so that it doesn't hit the frame of the tank.

Any new pics or vids of this skimmer in action? Seems to only be one or two on YouTube. Thanks

Sorry. Photobucket just wont let me move it for some reason. No tags. Ok kool. Loaded it below. Guess they changed stuff around.

Any updates on performance? I am planning on using one for an ADA 90p build.

Since it appears to skim on the wet side, how long does it take to fill the collection cup?

Mine is running just fine. I can run it dryer or wet. Can make several days on dry. Made almost a week once. I just turned it up to run a more wet skimmate. So far I like and one think that did is eliminate most bubbles from the water exit.

It collects about a 1/2 or a bit more collection cup per day. I dump it once a day but only clean the cup once per week. Seems to be fine. That way, just takes a few secs to take it out and dump it.

Would you all recommend I swap my 9002 for this new design?

I find the 9002 inconsistent and the elbow on the airline to pump always clogs

Only if it would fit, the 9002 fits the back compartment of most all in ones, the 9004 does not. In general if the elbow of a 9002 is clogging repeatedly the install is the issue, if it is under a canopy or submerged too deeply saltwater or salty moist air are drawn in and the elbow clogs rapidly, this won't happen when the depth is correct and the skimmer is able to get fresh air that is not so laden with salt and moisture. In general it should be able to go 9-12 months between the elbow clogging, if it clogs more rapidly, I would change up the installation if possible to remedy this.

cant be too deep, i have it at the recommended line marker 1/2-3/4" raised past waterline... and i have an open rear chamber, and yes the 9004 can fit... but will it improve my performance... lol. if i can get this elbow working better, i would prefer to stay with the 9002

That does look fine, I am puzzled by why it would clog so quickly unless the CO2 scrubber is getting moist and some of the media is getting drawn in.

The 9004 is stronger, it uses a needle wheel so the bubbles are finer and more of them. Also it actively surface skims so it draws in a more concentrated protein laden water to begin with compared to the passive diffusion of the 9002 which works more slowly. It does not have an elbow it instead just has an airline nipple on a volute cap for the needlewheel. I am not sure though how it would work with any sort of CO2 scrubber as this might overly restrict the air, it does not have the level of suction that the venturi would have.

so in your tunze opinion, would i get stronger skimming from the 9004? keep in mind i have mostly sps... and prefer UNLS

The 9002 is a venturi skimmer, air is added after the pump, so the needlewheel would do no good. No change is planned for the 9002.

The 9004 is definitely a stronger skimmer, it reacts faster and will remove more.

Roger, I'm very interested in this skimmer for my new Solana tank. Do you know if it will fit in the back? Are the magnets easily placed on different sides of the skimmer? Is there a bracket sold in case the magnets don't work? Thanks!

It measures 4.3 by 3.5, the magnets only fit into recesses in the back and cannot be moved to another side. There is no other mounting option.

does anyone know if the 9004 will fit in the back of a Red Sea Max 130? I know the 9002 will, but wondering if the 9004 will also?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, I cannot confirm this, we had one report from France that it fit and one from the US that it did not.
