Newbie Corner Feedback Thread

I forgot to include you in this month's article Paul. It should be out sometime tonight or tomorrow but I can make a correction after it is posted. The title is "Bogus Information".

;)

Hi WaterKeeper,

Just read your "Bogus Information".
Very good article and helpful for all of us.

I have one question want to ask you.
For Activated Carbon, when the time it removes DOC, does it also remove trace elements in same time?
If yes, what kindda trace elements can be removed by Activated Carbon?

Thanks
pete

Hi Pete,

Yes it can remove trace elements. Some things, like iodine, can be absorbed directly but others, like metals, need to be in the form of organo-metallic ligands to be removed. If one does regular water changes the materials removed by the carbon will be replaced and there should be no shortage in the tank's water.

WaterKeeper excellent article on bogus information. Thank you!

Quick question:

How did you reach your conclusion that "[c]oral, anemones and similar critters don’t directly consume dissolved organic materials"?

Thanks!

The only guys I know of that directly consume dissolved substances are bacteria and to a minor extent algae. All the higher organisms are predatory and eat the bottom of the food chain without needing direct absorption of carbon compounds. Until the bacteria process them into usable nutrients they would not do much good. See Food of the Reef for a more detailed explanation.

Question of the day. Is a Free Radical a cheap hippie? :p

Wasn't it a James Bond film when he said he was "eliminating all free radicals", to Moneypenny?

Bond, James Bond also stared in the movie 'Octopussy', but his name did not appear at the end of the credits.

Reference: New to the Hobby.
