Nine peppermint angels!!!!

sad to read some of these posts...

It truly is, unfortunately some of us on here just can't wait to troll for someone and ruin a great thread with a page of whining back and forth because they clearly had a bad day and are looking to take it out on anyone. Looking forward to more pics of the these "holy grail" of angelfish!

Guys this thread is going way off track. Rufus did a fantastic job in collecting and bringing these fish up at those depths. He risks his life every time he does this and due to him being the only person doing it, you can see how dangerous it is.

Koji and Rufus have a good relationship because 90% of the time when Rufus catches something deep and rare, Koji will take it from him. Now I can assusre you, Koji will not be paying the same amount for his fish as a regular customer.

Rufus can essentialy offer this fish for any price he would like because if he doesnt get it for you, who will? Depending on how Rufus dives (what mixes he uses) his bottom time at those depths can be about 15-20 minutes. Not a lot of time to collect fish and remember Rufus doesnt go down alone. No disrespect to Rufus but his team risk there lives as well every time they do a dive that deep. $ 10 - $ 20k per fish is very high, I agree but consider a dive team of say 5 - 8 people going down to risk there lives. Everyone needs to get paid as well. You take wages and all the equipment and transport costs and Rufus doesnt make nearly as much as you may think.

As I said guys, this thread is going off track, this is a awesome moment for this industry, rare fish collected at 400 feet deep. Enjoy the moment!

I hope Wayne will pay not 20k for it not even 15k.
Its too risky, I know Rufus go to great risk to collect this holy grail but 20k is obscene

People risk their lives in jobs everyday for a lot less than what he could make in a years time just on this fish alone. we will say hypothetically 10k each (which we all know is way lower than what each will see for) 90K for a days dive x's 12 months 90x12=1,080,000$... Not too shabby even after expenses

that number isn't even close at over a million. You are assuming he will get 10 every month and can get 10k each for them every time - which is not going to happen. That is the reason why it has been so long since he has done it again.

I do agree there are other jobs that are also dangerous, but those are choices people make.

In a free market anyone can sell anything at anytime for whatever they want (within the laws of course :)) I think every wholesaler at some point in time has bypassed the normal supply chain and sold to the consumer - it really doesn't effect anything long term.

Kudos for the catch. Beautiful angels!

I'd like to know if Rufus caught anything else at those depths besides pepps and narcosis?

Yeah he did, he caught a new unidentified chromis and different variante mystery wrasse. Watch this space soon though for more information.

my ears still ring after I went 3 m deep this morning in the pool lol cant even imagine 400 ft ... isnt that where mermaids live ? lol

While the people that will be purchasing these fish are not your average reefer, I hope that several of them, like Humaguy, will come online and document their journey with these fish.

It's not often that we get a chance to learn about a "new" fish in the hobby. While I know these are not the first collected, but this puts several fish in the hands of hobbyists and it will be interesting to see how challenging these beauties are going to be.

Dave B

Exactly. I hope the rest of us can learn a lot from this.
Extreme Congrads, Huma! I hope you share every detail of the experience. I hope to see a Peppermint Blog from you. Wishing you success!

IMO, Rufus has every right to set the price. This is a luxury item. It is an extremely rare item not to be had by those who are concerned with price. As the old saying goes if you have to ask how much it costs you probably cant't afford it.

Awesome thread. Look foward to seeing pictures of progress.

Awesome work Rufus!

Best of luck Humaguy!

+1

Very interested to learn of the process and the experience of collecting these amazing fish.

Ditto that.

Rufus, if it's not too inquisitive, what kind of mortality rate do you see with these deep fish? Did you lose peppermints after bringing them to the surface? Do you decompress them by needling, or cage them and slowly bring them up over several days? What was the temp at depth, and how deep did you catch them? Any issues with keeping them cool enough at the surface?

Plus a million other questions!

Lol. I think Rufus probably gets so much questions on how he collects them.... but I think he will keep them secret.

Rufus, I would love to do a dive with you sometime if you would be ok with that? Over the next few months, need to make my way out to you.
