Noisy Vortech DrySide FIX!!

Again, I don't want to sound OT. But I'm actually arguing an ON Topic point... I've had three MP10 dry sides. One very noisy, one quiet, one silent.

Point is... the noise variance between dry sides is significant. So much so that if swapping bearings can make the difference, it's worth a shot as long as you are ready to buy a new dry side should the adventure not work out.

Just tried this fix and I'm halfway there. Sadly I scratched up the magnet pretty bad removing the old bearings. Hopefully it still works ok. One side got a little rounded out where the magnet meets up with the bearing. The problem I'm having now is getting the new bearings on. Are you guys using some kind of grease or lube?

I got the bearings on and the pump put back together. It seems to be working perfectly. Thanks for the write up guys.

was this because you hit the end of the shaft with a hammer? (big no no)

thats why its mentioned to use a brass punch or a smaller on to fit the hole in the shaft. that way you dont flare the end of the shaft.

glad to see you had a successful overhaul!

Replaced bearings on both of my mp40s. One was fairly quite already and now is almost silent...the other had a rattle to it and now is pretty quite but not as quite as the other. What would be some reasons for one being louder than the other after bearing changeout? Either way the fix was great, thanks again!

could just be a bad bearing.... or a noisy bearing (not bad, but not quiet)

also, technique on how you installed them can make a difference.
sometimes the first one you repair can be say over stressed or over tightened and thus stress it and make it noisy.

i have had that problem with water pumps when overhauling them. and i just go grab another bearing and throw it in there. (most of the time i order extras because its only a few dollars and i have them on hand)
it solves it 99% of the time...
(except my last MP10, which i am ordering bearings from a different company since the ones i got are nasty noisy at high speeds........)

Cool...I'll give that a try. One difference I noticed when changing them out was the real quite one's bearings were a lot harder to get off and the louder pumps back bearing would move a little on the shaft (around 1/8" or so) both with the old and new bearings.

I did this replacement on an mp40 and I ordered both the stainless and ceramic/stainless hybrid #5 from Boca. Put in the ceramic because the SS ones didnt seem to have any lube inside them. The ceramics def. had some packing grease. At first the pump was dead silent. No break in noise at all. You couldnt hear it across the room at full power. 3 weeks later, the dryside is making some noise, More than I expected. I wll be keeping an ear on it.

edit: I think my dryside magnet is unbalanced and excessive vibration is causing the bearings to wear prematurely. I will be looking into eventually getting it balanced on a propeller balancing jig at my local R/C shop.

my mp10 started getting louder, and then I found this thread, so I attempted to repair mine. I got as far as removing the screw that holds the magnet on. Could someone tell me what size hex key your supposed to use to get that off, I used one of those tools that has different sizes all connected together on one tool but doesnt say what size each one is, I was able to get the other screws off, but this last one wouldnt move at all and the hex key just spins inside it, so I want to try with a brand new key before trying to drill it out

update- I used a dremel tool with cut-off attachment to make a slot on the screw and then it came off easily with a flathead screwdriver. I then continued on the dissasembly, I used the vise to get the bearings off, one slide slid off easily the other I used a center punch and hammer which broke the bearing.
I then put the new bearings on and I again used the vice to tap them on and one of them broke, the outer piece broke but I decided to continue anyway and see what happens, well they ended up sounding just as noisy, maybe a little louder. I got the ones that shaggs linked to on ebay. I wonder what the difference between rubber and stainless steel seals make. the ones I ordered came with rubber.

I tried some 7x14x5 bearings from BOCA
They were Stainless and no matter what I did to lube them, they were noisy
I just received some form ACER http://www.acerracing.com/ball_bearings/7X14MM_Ceramic_Ball_Bearing-608-30.html
and they too are noisy
I am waiting for an email back from ACER to find some quieter bearings
Otherwise, I will buy a new dry side and never bother doing this again

FYI, when doing this, I used the old bearings to press the new ones as to not damage them
The short shaft doesn't hold the bearing, and the long side only needs a pair of pliers or a vice-grip to remove the old bearing

My mp40 has been making some loud squeaking noises and has a loud hum to it, so I am looking at changing out the bearings.

Can someone please point me in the right direction for the correct bearings on ebay (again, this is for an mp40) Want to make sure I order the correct ones. :)

I believe I have a Gen1, because I had to push out the magnet assembly, I didn't have any flathead screw to hole onto.

please pm or post here.

ACER told my to try some synthetic grease, but this has not made the bearings any quieter
They have a 'wooshing' noise, and are noisier than a new dry side

I have had enough of wasting money on bearings

Time to order a new motor

I wonder if Ecotech knows about this upgrade for silencing their pumps... For the cost of their pumps, I would have expected better quality parts.

what technically is the upgrade? the bearings??
even after you replace your bearings, there will be a time to replace them again, because the magnet and wetside put lateral force on the bearings which causes the wear and noise.

im not saying they cant upgrade their bearings before, but i think they should look into a "thrust bearing" which is a needle bearing that looks like a pizza. this would take a lot of stress off the dryside and maybe quiet it down....
the only down side to a thrust bearing, is i dont know if they can be run in a dry state, or if they would need some kind of lub/oilbath. but who knows...

i know they know we are messing with them, because there are people that oops the process and end up sending their units in for replace/repair.....

Just took the bearings off my MP10!! It was really easy on mine for some reason??? I actually pulled them about with my teeth. They came off after a bit of pulling them. Now, has anyone had any luck with the boca bearings?
