Nook's Reef!!

Nice pics of those two fish, Gabe!! I am impressed.

That vodka is not very good:lol:

Dave FWIW I did that myself but instead of Vodka I dosed a mixture of zeozyme and pohls coralsnow with in a couple of weeks just about all algae and nutirents were basically gone I was very very pleased. I also just feed rods once a week now

Nook,

I had no idea you were dosing vodka!!

Did you want to try my denitrator on your system? If it does well for you, you just keep it and if it does not I'll take it back...

BK

P.S.: PM me as I will never find this thead again...

I appreciate your offer but it would probably have to be a pretty large unit to handle 1000 gallons;) I am going to try the vodka method for a while and see how it does. My nitrates are not very high and I stopped the source which should eventually get me back to even.

I started dosing vodka per the instructions in the recent Reefkeeping article just 8 days ago. I have 1000 gallons total water volume, my nitrate hangs about 8-9 on Lamotte kit and my phosphate is anywhere from 0.04-0.07 with my Hanna meter.

I started with 0.1cc of Absolut Vodka per 25 gallons, so, 4cc for the first 3 days, then 8ccs for the next 4 days and today I added 0.5cc which is 8.5cc for the next week.

As of today, my nitrates and phosphates have not changed. The reason I started dosing vodka is because I have two huge skimmers and overfed with Rod's Reef over the last 9 months of having a new tank. Cyano has been an issue on the sand and rocks and I siphoned the sand pretty thoroughly with 8 water changes of 30 gallons in a week or two. I have went through a lot of GFO and carbon the last 9 months and it is pricy!

My goal is to stop feeding the Rod's which is pretty heavy in smaller particles that just collect in my sandbed, rock, etc. I am cutting back on feeding somewhat as I have a heavy hand. I am hoping to avoid adding a refugium with the vodka dosing method.

With Vodka, you may see cyano anyway for a bit. Some tanks seem to act as if the vodka fueled the growth, while others have watched it go away.

My tank has hints of it here and there, but I've not dosed anything specifically designed to target cyano bacteria in over 7 months. I'd kinda like to do it just to remove every trace, but the skimmer has to be off for most of those products I use. I read how Genetics used something (.4 of the normal dosage) and it worked while his skimmer was still on.

I tend to feed my fish pretty well, and every night my tank gets some frozen cyclop eeze as part of that nightly feeding.

Schplitter, if you are giving away a denitrator I want to be first in line. My new setup is the only one I have ever had without a dsb. I plan on buying one later on.

I had to do it twice to rid the cyano at 0.4x the recommended dose and scaled my skimmer back to dry skimming for a day each time. Again, I'm not a big fan of my water visibly changing colors (started changing at 0.4x) and would rather not turn off the skimmer for any long period of time as it will probably have a negative impact on my O2 levels and pH. Seemed to have worked but the true test is longevity.

All we would have to do is add more Sulfur to make it work on your tank. Especially if your levels are already low... Just keep it in mind. We can always drink the Vodka!!!

Here are some more pictures that I took of 'Nooks tanks the other night.
I'll start with the "Softie" tank. Its 96x30x30 I believe.

Sorry for the reflections with lights on behind me, and a TV to the cameras left. Also lights were going on and off in the tank. By this time, the beer was getting to me and I never went back to take a better shot. But you get the idea.

Frogspawn.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ngusry/3200811807/" title="Fairy Wrasse by ngusry, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3411/3200811807_af04d4540e.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="Fairy Wrasse" /></a>
Fairy Wrasse? Quick moving little bugger. I wish I could have had more time to get a nice picture of him.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ngusry/3201658054/" title="Tang by ngusry, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3448/3201658054_1142a83ed6.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="Tang" /></a>
?Tang. I can never remember the name of this particular one. Like his owner, he spent most of the night hiding in this rock structure worried about pumps, lights, and who was going to do something stupid.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ngusry/3200862863/" title="Hawk Fish by ngusry, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3116/3200862863_bd65a12bcd.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="Hawk Fish" /></a>
Hawkfish.

The Clown fish picture above is also from this tank.
Sorry for no coral pictures from this tank, as they were over shadowed by the large beast next to it. Once the rest of the pictures get up, I'll post pictures of the cube and the SPS.

That tang is a Sailfin tang. The hawkfish is an Arc-Eye hawkfish.

I love those combo frogspawns that are part pink and part green in the same colony.

Pics look great, Gabe:thumbsup: The wrasse is a Melanarus.

Now I just need to find a carpenter to handle this unique trim project:D
