I don't recall ever seeing newts listed in the hunting, fishing and trapping laws. I bet they are in there somewhere though. I would suggest releasing it, just in case someone decides to make an issue of it. Amphibians in general are not doing very well lately.

You are 99% safe :) Did it have spots on it? If so, its probably an eastern newt, often available in pet stores

I meant "safe" as far as the legality of the matter :)

Many newts/salamanders secrete poison from their skin, including the ones commonly sold in the pet trade.

We used to play with them all the time as kids. We would keep them overnight then let them go the next morning. As with any wild animal, wash your hands after you're done playing with it.

The pic was taken by another parent and sent to me.I only saw the pic ,so I dont know if it had spots. Its the only pic we have. The newt has long been released from where it was found.

I've personaly never seen one like that and was just curious is all.

Its the juvenile stage of the eastern red spotted newt, which is technically not a salamander. They're terrestrial while the adults are aquatic. The juvenile stage is actually called a "red eft." They're definately something you wouldn't want to eat, but they are much less toxic than their western counter parts which can cause halucinations and possibly death when eaten (happened with some fraternity pranks...). There's no real threat from handling these little guys though as long as hands are washed, and the animal is not placed in your mouth lol.

Good to know about the toxins and even better knowing I wont be enjoying a lovely stay in Attica state prison.:)LOL

Thanks, Good reads everyone, nice pic Gary.
