Official Borbonius Anthias Thread

Question for those that own these - how are they with cleaner shrimp? Similar to all Anthias in that they may or may not eat them?

Thanks in advance!

The Borbs that I've kept and come across never even looked at my cleaner shrimp. I wouldn't hesitate keeping them together.

At first (as I'm sure you've researched) ; they are very shy. I feed small portions 2-3 times a day to make sure there is enough food available and surrounding them when they decide to eat. I will feed 2-3 times a day when they do start eating for approx. 2 week period. Afterwards, I "wean" them off the 2-3x a day regimental schedule eventually working my way down to once a day. As a treat; I will feed additionally when I feel like it.

Perfect, thanks Taipan, yes I've read that they're shy about eating at first but later eat quite a bit. I feed my fish once per day with an additional treat occasionally (usually after I've been working in the tank).

Thanks very much for the advice!

Mine could care less about my shrimp. No worries there. Same can be said about my other Anthias too.

Mine isn't shy at all when it comes to eating and hasn't been since day 1. In fact, mine is an absolute pig and doesn't seem to be phased by even the biggest fish in my tank. When food hits the tank, my borb is right there in the mix will all of the fish.

I've setup an automatic thawed frozen food feeder to supplement my daily feedings while I am at work. It feeds mysis and LRS Reef Frenzy once a day and I feed in the evening after work. This way it's getting fed at least twice a day. In the month that I have had it, it's already grown a lot. He loves the LRS Reef Frenzy and Fish Frenzy as well as the frozen mysis.

Here is an overview of the full feeding system for those that are curious. It works remarkably well. I only set it up a week or so ago and already the fish know that food is coming when they hear the Dos spin up. As soon as they hear it they now rush over to that side of the tank.

Hello guys! I picked up a borbonius anthias 3 nights ago and I'm loving it already! I have her in my QT but I had a question. The first night she didnt eat (expected) but on the second day she fed aggressively on thawed cyclops. The next day though, she isn't eating as aggressively. She would swim up very fast at whatever food she saw, then would just follow it with her head till it was swept up. I've tried frozen cyclops, R.O.E., frozen mysis, Rod's foods original as well as pacific plankton, and reef caviar. She would do this with all the food, and every once in awhile suck up a piece (usually either of the Rod's food). It wouldn't bother me since shes still eating but the fact that she ate so well the day before worries me. Maybe she was just that hungry so she ate everything the first time?

Also another thing, she brushes up against a piece of PVC with the side of her cheek a couple of times a day (2-3). She does it so fast, just goes up right next to it, whips forward to graze and whips back to the original position to do it again 2-3 times, and its only on that one PVC and sometimes the glass. No spots/dots on her body so far, could it be flukes? Should I treat with prazi now preemptively or wait it out? She did have white stringy poop during her first feeding, haven't seen it since and I've been feeding food soaked in a variety of multivitamins, amino acids, as well as Focus and Metronidazole.

Personality/behavior is awesome, usually hiding in her spot between the PVC and rock unless I stand in front of the tank. Once she sees im in front she comes out into the open and waits looking up at the surface of the water.

One more thing, anybody have any experience with having a borbonius and a ventralis together? A local store has a male ventralis for a good price and I've always wanted one, funny how two fish I wanted for the longest time but couldn't find appear at the same time

Slief, that is awesome. Thanks for sharing!

Very neat and clever idea!

Thank you both.. It's working out really well. The fish love it and the Borb always seems to be the first to eat from it. He's really benefitting as a result and has fattened up quite a bit. I'm really pleased with his progress and his lack of intimidation from his tank mates.

Here are a couple pics from yesterday. He's got a serious belly and has grown a lot since I got him a month ago.

These fish typically come from very deep and dark water. They aren't used to the brighter lighting in our tanks let alone their new surroundings. As such, the fish is probably still adjusting.

As for the brushing up against the PVC, in my experience, that is typically a sign or parasites. I will defer on to others here as to the best course of treatment. You might be best starting a thread in the disease treatment section to get further advice on that. My first thought would be a dip to determine if it's flukes but again, I'm not an expert on parasite treatment so I will defer onto others.

Well I've joined the club! I read every page of this thread and debated on making the purchase.

I was lucky and found one that was eating and had been at the LFS for a few weeks. It hid for the first 24 hours, getting bolder as time passes.

What's the going rate on these fish as of January 2015?

They have a few at Old Town Aquarium in Chicago. A great place for fish, if not a little pricey. I think they're offering them for sale for $350

This is try number two. My first baby came in Dember 30 and FedEx showed up 4 hours late, he looked stressed and after acclimation had a tough time swimming. Was deceased the next morning.
This guy came in this week it was 30 degrees warmer which helped when FedEx was 6 hours late, but he was swimming fine and eating the next day. Today not even hiding! Bad cell pic.

I figured I would post an update on my Borbonius. He's doing really well. Fat and and happy and grown a lot since I got him just over two months ago. He eats like a pig and will take the LRS Reef Frenzy or Fish Frenzy right out of my hands. He has no issues competing for food with the tangs and Fox Face who are probably well over 30x his mass. He's always right in the mix come feeding time and will get right in the middle of the feeding frenzy with the big fish without any fear at all

The tank is fed 3 times a day. Once at noon which is thawed frozen mysis via my auto feeding system, then New Life Spectrum pellets via another feeder at 1PM. Around 5PM I hand feed nori followed by LRS Reef and or Fish Frenzy and PE Mysis. I'm not sure if he eats the pellets because I neverr really paid attention but he loves the LRS stuff and loves the mysis. When I first got him and up utill recently, you could see his stomach through his body. It was dark colored and he was kind of transparent as you can see in the photos taken a month ago... That is no longer the case. He's put on a lot of weight in a short amount of time. He's become one of my favorite fish and I really want another one now.

Here are a couple pictures taken a few days ago.

What's the max size this gets? 4.5"

Looking at the PJ, it seems like it's bigger than that

He's smaller than the PJ. At least for now. My PJ's are pretty large but the PJ you see in the picture above was several inches behind the Borb. They do get about 4" from what I understand. He's about 1.75" now but he's grown close to 1/2" in the 2.5 months I've had it. He's an absolute pig and eats a few times a day. He's eating pellets too which surprised me. Given that, he eats at least 3 times a day now. Frozen Mysis at noon, pellets at 1PM and LRS + Mysis around 5 or 6 when I hand feed. It's gotten so fat that it looks pregnant.

Thanks for the info. :)

Does anybody know if we can sex them easily or if they actually change sex depending on the hierarchy?
