Heh, good think I have an 18" open top tank w/a viewing box!
Got the piece yesterday not looking to far off from the picture at all. It got a little beat up in shipping (to be expected), I'm going to give it a little time and then snap some pics.. I tried to yesterday but when I started to pay attention with my tank, next thing I knew I was gluing things down and messing around so much the lights went off.. ha oh well maybe tonight.

Thanks! Took some pictures tonight. It's browning on me a bit but hopefully it will come back around in a couple weeks/month when it adjusts to my tank, and I find the right spot for it . If not I'll just dig it for the odd shaped knobby coralites.
Anyways here it is. Hopefully if all goes well I'll have some update photos down the road with better colours.

No, I'm not sure why I'm having such a hard time Id'ing it. Coralites are so distinct.

No luck with the ID although I haven't had much time. I had some trouble with it but it's holding in there now. For the first couple weeks after getting it, it started to STN from the base up. However it has stopped now and is started to show signs of healing and colouring back up. Seems to rather finicky to the smallest swings in alk.

Id a frag is always a hard job...growth forms could help alot but...
My guess:
A. austera....thick walled axial corallites with small openings. Radial corallites are sometimes arranged in rows, are irregular in size, the larger projecting outwards with wide square shapped openings. (extarct fron Veron's book)

Thanks for the comments. This piece is still throwing me for a loop. It does very much look like the austera skeletal picture.
However I think the same can be said for Samoensis
I'm really keeping my fingers crossed on this one. It's the most finicky piece I have at this time. When it first started to recede I fragged a small branch from that back and moved that to my frag tank. It was fine for a few a little while then started to recede as well. It appears to be VERY flow demanding, and very sensitive to the smallest of alkalinity swings. I'm hoping it will make it long enough to start growing and hopefully get a good ID.

+1 on the austera. Although still small, it looks like all the branches are tapering and definitely growing outwards from each other.
