Oregon Tort(s?) Lineage Questions

Here is some more of it

It is quite possible that they are the same piece, but because of different water qualities and placements different clades and pigments have been stimulated creating the differences.

Still, probably my favorite piece....well one of at least...I have a lot of "favorites"

I've seen the becker tort; it has made the rounds quite a bit here in SD. It doesn't look anything like the OT.

I was referring to the middle of the paragraph

But here is an old picture of mine

Upscales has the original OBT. Here the story behind from reeffarmers:

Captive farmed Tortuosa Acropora have been demanding fairly high prices for quite a few years. Most of the currently available blue and purple colored tortuosa fragments are being farmed from colonies and cultured corals that were originally exported from the Solomon Islands from 1998 to 1999. That time period was just prior to their most recent Civil War. At that time the Solomon Island coral exporter was working with local natives who established a local coral culturing operation. The last wild whole colonies that were exported from the Solomons occurred in mid-1998. By the time of Macna X in Los Angeles (late 1998), Solomons had completely switched to only exporting cultured corals attached to cement disks. Many people who attended Macna X in Los Angeles remember the absolutely incredible Solomons Disks Bob Mankin had on display. Back in spring to mid-1998, Steve Tyree had acquired one of the last Acropora tortuosa wild whole colonies exported from the Solomons. The colony was personnally delivered by Steve to Robert Becker. Robert grew the coral for 3 to 4 years and produced the first mass distribution of captive grown tortuosa fragments within the domestic US market. After Solomons made the switch to only cultured disks, there were some Acropora tortuosa branches that were exported as cultured disks. Many of these were acquired by Bob Mankin of Coral Farms. I believe that Bob Mankin's disks were then distributed up and down the west coast. Offsprings of these cultured Solomons tortuosa corals became known as the Bennet Tort, the Cali Tort, the Oregon Tort and the Seattle Tort. There are now many other corals called torts. The first Tortuosa Reeffarmers has decided to distribute as a Limited Edition coral, is what Steve Tyree believes is the first Acropora tortuosa farmed within the US. The Tort that preceded the tort rage.

Well, all's I know is, I have a tort sold to me from a very reputable fragger as a Shuan Bennet Tort (SBT). I also have a tort I bought as at an LFS as a frag on the ORA frag plug as the OBT. They were positioned about 24" from each other in similar elevation and flow conditions for years in my old tank and both slowly grew. At several points I'd say they looked similar and then, at other points, I'd think they looked different. For the most part the SBT has been every so slightly faster growing, lighter in depth of color and not quite as thick as the ORA coral with finer coralites.

I recently moved and took down that tank and have all my SPS in a holding tank for now. Both torts have grown at insane rates since this move (why is a mistery to me) and look very, very similar at this time.

In watching this recent growth and move toward similarity, I have been convinced they are of the same original stock and that the subtle difference are light and flow induced and little more. The quote posted by Dejavu references a Shuan and I am assuming it is Shaun Bennet. I think that seals it, they are the same coral from different sources.

But I do love em both!

FWIW, this is the OT I acquired from FragFarmer as mentioned in that thread that Scott linked to...

the story that i got from Travis was that a trans shipment came in to Waves... and there was a totally browned out colony (of what seemed to be a "tort")...i believe he told me that there was two small colonies of this coral..one of the colonies started to dump so Travis ended up taking the other colony back to his store "Upscales" where it colored up to be the most solid blue SPS ever...ps....the ora and upscales is most likely the same coral. IMO

You definitely have the oregon, I have always been told the oregon has no green tint.

Here is my ORA tort which I think is as good looking as my oregon.

Thats what i believe as well Poker. Like i said before. If you are gonna name a coral be original. It eliminates all the confusion.

I think they are one in tge same..I had one as solid blue as can be turn a little green when I changed to a different bulb so tank conditions could definitely cause the same coral to look different..

I hae the Upscales Tort, the ORA Oregon and the ORA Cali....

Here is the Upscales..the bluest I have ever seen. Very rich is I guess how I would describe it..this pic is old.

The ORA piece I have is very small yet but I can tell the difference colorwise immediately fwiw.
