OT - anyone know how to get rid of dead animal smell??

Can anyone help me here? My dog rolled in a rotting animal today at Ellison Park - complete with maggots, one of which was still stuck to her after I got her away. :uzi:

I sprayed her down outside, put on my rubber gloves and washed her with Pantene (our doggie shampoo of choice - rather, whatever product my husband happens to be using at the time). Well.... the stench has proven stronger than the shampoo.
My poor little girl is sitting outside on the deck barking (she's not used to this kind of abuse......), but I just really don't want to let her in.....

Help???

Ugh..... After 3 washings, she's allowed back in the house - although I can still smell a trace of the grossness.....
I followed up the pantene (which did nothing except add that perfume smell into the mix -not good) with tomato juice, which I let sit for 5 min. Then I rinsed and washed again with "de-skunk" shampoo. Followed by an abnormal amount of doggie cookies.
Still the smell lingers - just one of those days.....

BTW - anyone with a white dog who needs to do the tomato juice thing should know that the white patches in my pup are pinkish now.....

My little dog bounce found a dead seal once on the beach. she was literally inside it by the time I got to her. She stunk for weeks no matter what I did.

My girlfriend is a groomer. She said to use douche, it works on skunks as well. Dawn dish soap is another. Tomato juice will stain your dog, and is more of a myth than actually working in the "grooming" world.

I'm sorry but I can't help but laugh! I should have put that into consideration before I recommended...lmao.:lmao:

I hope the smell goes away soon for sure.

I usually keep diy skunk spray supply on hand for my mutts . hydrogen peroxide, baking soda , dawn. Plus a decent first aide kit. I'm often miles away from a vet. NEVER used it for skunks. Worked alright for dead carp. Peroxide is good to use to induce vomiting. costs a buck? SALINE solution for eyes. benadryl for bees. porcupines are common where I hunt. Pliers or a Letterman have saved the day. My kit often gets raided for this or that. I TOSS in some shizzle for humans. Bandaids , Imodium, etc. Backpack occasionally gets in the way. It has saved my butt more than once. They sell pre made kits. I don't care much for them. lots of stuff on YouTube. I gotta say a dog first aide book is really nice when bad stuff happens. I'm ex military, Corrections ,fireman, combat medic , EMT and a RN. A KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID book is what you want in a crisis.

Well, in this case, what we need to do first is to locate the source of the smell. Then deal with it cleanly. First, clean the area and get rid of the dead body that caused the smell. Use odor remover to reduce the intensity of smell. Apply some charcoal in the area to absorb the rest of the smell. Good luck

Have had success with Lemon juice and Ketchup. Tomato juice does stain animals' skin.
coconut shampoo and lemon juice also successful
