OT: Kill-A-Watt

the club could purchase one of these. In fact we have discussed doing so in the past.

if enough people agree, we will.

I saw this on the DFWMAS board, and thought I'd share, might not be a bad investment. You could see how inefficent your older pumps are, maybe even add everthing up and see just how much electricity your tank is costing per hour, personally I dont wanna know! :)

As someone who has monitored the wattage of his tank (I jury-rigged a system using a clamp-meter and power strip) let me offer this advice: YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW!! I'm not kidding. The amount of money you'd need to spend to buy new power-sipping equipment is likely far more than the money you're wasting on electricity so in the end, it is just better to live in ignorance.

lol.....that was my thought exactly.

however....if people think the club should own such a device...let me know.

If I ever saw what my tank was costing me to run, the tank would have a hamster in it the next day lol. I don't want to know!

Seriously, though, I really think these Kill-A-Watt devices are cool. I have thought many times about buying one. I will probably do so, eventually.

Also, if any of you guys have not stumbled across ThinkGeek before, head over there and waste some time. They are a GREAT site.

I really don't care, however I know what my FW setups cost me and its minimal;

The marjority of my tanks are being driven by 2 whitewater linear pumps pushing sponge filters. The lights are 4 foot shop lights with 20W bulbs, there are 10 of them total. Once my SW tanks are totally going they will cost more then the other 60 tanks I have in electriciy.

Last month I got my lights onmy 75. It was a dual HQI ballast (400W) I am using single ended Radium 20K bulbs. Anyway when we got our bill it had doubled from the month before. That was before the current heat wave.

The tank didn't have as much room as I thought in the canopy and the bulbs were very close to the water. S it caused my chiller to run most the time the lights were on.

Anyway my new T5 setup came in yesterday, I won't be here this weekend to install them, but I'll let you know how it goes after the new lights are in.
