OT - RC Airplanes

I flew Saturday at the Smyrna high school. There is a group of guys out there that fly helicopters at their sports field. Several of them are quite a bit more advanced than I am and I think I learned a lot from them. They all had nitro helis and smaller electric helis. They were really impressed with the power of mine and at least one of them is serious about getting one like it.

They invited me to come to a small funfly at Middle Point (Murfreesboro) on Sunday. I went for a while and had a great time there as well. I flew a couple of times and even did an inverted blade scrape on the runway. It was cool to get cheers from people who obviously flew better than I did.

Very cool! I'm still amazed at what you can make that heli do. Maybe they could put on a show at the field sometime too?

I haven't had much of a chance to fly lately. Been putting in uber hours on a project. Hopefully I get out this weekend.

Did anyone do any flying this weekend? Maybe tomorrow?

I'm still hoping to get a small chopper and a small plane, but truck issues seem as though they may delay me a bit. :(

I hope to be able to get out tomorrow. I think I'm going to replace the main gear on the Funtana, it only has about 4" prop clearance (less with the tail raised) and it's kind of spongy. I think a carbon fiber set with new tailwheel is in order. Actually after inspection the entire airframe seems to be kind of shoddy and needs some triangle stock and blocks to reinforce several (IMO) key areas. So it's not going out for a while until I'm happier and I get it re-balanced.

Sorry to hear about the truck problems man :worried:

Not going to get to go today. I went to Smyrna yesterday and flew there. I ended up getting one whole flight with the big heli and stripped the main gear after about a minute on the second flight. Got my 500 flying last week so I flew it once.

Dang, sorry to hear. Did it do any serious damage to the heli?

It was pretty windy out today. I didn't even get up in the air, the sock was straight out so it was probably 20+ mph gusts.

Nah, I just did an auto and got it down with no other damage. I've got a spare one but haven't put it on yet.

Well I fixed the main gear and flew it in my back yard yesterday. Was flying great and then I lost all power and lost too much headspeed to auto and crashed again. I hit level but it was hard enough to break the frames again. I am not sure if I'm going to fix it right now or wait a while. The frames seem to be pretty fragile if you hit too hard.

Crap dude. Seems much too finicky, at least for me. More time in the air, less time in the shop :hammer: Can you transfer the parts to a different frame?

Before this heli I had probably crashed one time in a year. Sometimes you just have bad luck I guess. I am thinking of putting the electronics back in my 600N and flying it for a while. I'm going to see how much the parts are going to cost first. I pretty much carried it in the house and put it down and didn't touch it after the crash. I might look at it some later. When it flies though, it flies great!

And just a few minutes ago my laptop just up and died. It is a few years old but I really liked it. A M1710 with top of the line stuff at the time. Just can't win. :(

That sucks dude. What happened to it? It may be easily fixable.

I'm in "collection" mode. I just picked up an Ultra Stick 60 today with an OS 60FP 2 stroke. Swapping that with a Saito FA-80 Golden Knight that's barely used I picked up for $125, which will be here later this week :bounce1:

Once I get back from my trip I'll be going to work on the Funtana and making the mods necessary (new main landing gear, tail wheel, fuse reinforcements, 3 blade prop) that one will be done. Then it's time to go to work on the Laser :wildone: Next on the list is a 33% Edge 540 gasser :bum:

In the meantime, I need to get better at the whole flying thing

Brandon, I still got the Mini Titan sitting here for ya. :lol2: I think I have decided to sell my TRex 250 as well so I can get the electronics to put my 600N back in the air. I love flying the 700E but I want to get my nitro going again so I can fly for longer than 5 min. at a time.

My newest addition :) Spare bedroom has become a hangar.

1/4 scale Patty Wagstaff Extra 300. Brison 3.2 52cc engine - my first gasser :D

Mike, you flying this weekend? If so, wanna help me fly this? :)

The Picture does it no justice, That plane is HUGE in person. Real nice can't wait to see it fly.
Bill

Thanks! :)

Hopefully I can get it out this weekend. I've flown the Extra 300S in a simulator a few times now, and it seems like it has a tendency to drop a wing at lower speeds, so it seems like landings will be a bit fast - but otherwise I think it will be a good flying plane.

Nice plane. I really like that size. I don't think I will make it down there this weekend. I am pretty sure I am going to Smyrna and fly my helis. I am going to try and help a guy out with his flybarless controllers if he gets them back. He had problems with them and sent them back to be checked out.

Nice pickup Zach... Sure you want to learn with that, haha.... The ground in real life is not as forgiving as the sim :D If you guys go to Symrna i might go too.

and yes extra's will be hot on landings, other wise it wil drop very quickly, trust me I know ;)

Zach's been flying a while, Rick. :) He's not just learning... however, I am about to relearn. :) Might be getting Zach's Harrier... we'll see!
