Our 40g Island waterfall

Funny enough i came home once to my old one half on one side of the overflow and flopped over the other side all wrapped between the teeth , i ended up having to surgically cut him loose with a razor blade so this time around we do constant check ups both for his safety and our other corals i guess with any new nem its important to track him for the first few weeks :)

reefwars, I liked your island out of the water idea but didn't want to go as far as you in my new build (since my 180g tank broke). So I did an island that gets close to the surface with some different LR at the top and then split the island with a channel or chasm. There is still a lot of work to be done but I had corals dying in small holding tanks and wanted this one up and running before I lost any more corals. The bulk of the island sits 1 1/2" above the sand on egg crate platforms and inside the island is as hollow as I could make it. Thanks for the inspiration.

I do have a build thread here if anybody is interested:

Thanks Ron I just read your whole build looks like a lot of thought went into it great build so far excited to see where it goes for you , dominant sps?

Update

Tank is still doing very well vinegar is being maintained and my magnificent picked a beautiful spot and has actually stayed there for the last two weeks prob helps that we've been spot feeding pellets to him at waters surface and he's getting good light and flow where he is so he prob thinks it ain't getting better than this lol bonus for us is his location was a spot I wasn't really using and no expensive corals he can wipe if he moves around a bit.

Very healthy and we ended up with a good specimen you can see him in the back left corner sitting at waters surface

We got a small frag pack from a friend consisting of utter chaos , yodas, mind blowing palys, blue steel and some others ...I'm home next weekend from work so I'll mount these bad boys once home

Also we got out mangroves in total count was 300 reds and almost 400 whites while we're not keeping all these but we are setting up lagoon for them tied into the system , here's some pics upon arrival

Whites

Reds

And some random shots my awesome wife took

Ok so back to my stand finishing lol the front is almost done but it's pain stakingly slow but here's a recap of what I'm doing for those who don't want to go back and read lol its a marble and granite mosaic with an octopus theme for the front of our tank

So because we don't want to spend another year doing the sides and adding a couple hundred more pounds I got into contact with a company who does hydrodipping , here's a link to what hydrodipping is

https://youtu.be/pKuXyeAGzEU

So the plan now is to sheet the stand with a thick plywood fastened well to each side these would be permanent and then layer a hydro dipped 1/4" black acrylic panel that's had been pre-drilled and machined before the dipping process this would be fastened extensively to the ply to avoid warping over the years , here's the image we chose to match up with our marble and granite mosaic front , this should add the look of the abstract pattern I wanted without all the labor and weight stone will add:)

Materials have arrived and just waiting on the acrylic to be finished then off for hydro dipping she goes :)

Cost wise this was a good choice and it will be something new and different or at least as far as I know in the way of finishing a stand in our hobby to be light weight and get an awesome airbrushed type pattern with out spending a grand plus

Enjoy!!

Where did you get all the mangroves and tiny clams? More importantly, what are you going to do with them? You could stat a small forest with all those mangroves!

I got them from a company in Florida called floridaplants via Joey , what your seeing in the pics are red mangroves and white mangroves the reds being the stalky ones , I'm doing a mangrove lagoon and eventually moving a bunch to my display once tall enough similar to before the crash and the rest will go in an external Refugium tied into the system on the side of the display :)

Long ways to go yet but will be pretty cool :)

Got home last night from 3weeks out of town tank is doing very well so nice to see the amount of growth that's happened over the last bit spacemonsters went from a few polyps to 16 all sps have growth and good Colors , need to attack this algae issue mostly bubble now so grabbing some emeral crabs and some other CUC today

Now that I'm home for a few days I'm picking up a nice Zoa pak off a friend which includes butt munchers, rainbow incinerators , red death paly , browse s and tyree Armageddon 2 plus some others

I head out and pick up our stands acrylic panels today for hydro dipping and will get them dropped off to the company this weekend and pick up when I'm in town next excited for this should be cool to see :)

This after noon I'm buying a 7year old system loaded with all kinds of colorful mushroom rocks and done other corals after this weekend tanks pretty much full just going to be buying acros and Zoas from here on out the only other coral I'm really after is a nice sized elegance ;)

I'll post some pics after my water change happens and new corals adjust to the system :)

Mangroves are downstairs doing their thing still that's going to take time but I'm looking at adding a small halide on them soon :)

Cheers pics coming soon :)

Beautiful tank, really. Yours looks like you've taken a section of the ocean and put it in your tank. What I mean by that is it looks natural. Most of the time in people's reefs you can tell they struggled placing things in good places. Yours looks like it naturally got there. Keep up the good work

Glad to see the Magnifica at a safer spot and not moving for you. It really took you no time to fill that tank up with corals again haha, good video, really shows your tank off well.

Here is my Magnifica after I got it into my DT

Nice tank, well laid out, lots of depth to it. Really looks larger than a 40 which is really nice to see.

Question(s) if you don't mind:
1. Power heads - is your intent to leave them covered like that? How bad does it impact your flow or if it matters
2. Is that your normal flow rate within the tank

Really did a good job.

Thanks a lot , once the mangroves get added it should be back to where we want it this tank last year was truly beautiful it's taken a serious step backwards but we're working with the best of a bad situation and were set happy with how far it's come since the crash in April :)

Yeah it's always just ran on one power head at 500gph and I added another small one on the opposite side that ones only 240 Gph then there's the split return outlet , where the tank is so shallow larger power heads didn't work to well lol

The algae tends to build up since the crash we were dealing with a high nutrient load from the die off so that's one part that still needs to be worked on , currently vinegar rising to keep nutrients low and now just need to get my CUC back to work , only livestock in the tank is two clowns and a flame angel atm:)

Flow does get restricted closer to cleaning time it the tank or corals don't seem to care much lol

How often do you change wives?
[emoji3]

Well my old signature use to say " turns out the misses wasn't reef safe" but this one is same wife for many years not sure how she's still around but lucky me she is :)

Josh he's looking great nice rich Colors and a great size :) yeah mine decided to stay now where he is hadn't moved an inch in weeks so I'm spot feeding him pellets where he is daily and he's getting crazy light and flow only time will tell but for now it looks like he's found the sweet spot and I could t be happier over the spot he chose as its perfect and was somewhere I wasn't really planning on using :)

Looks amazing. Does it smell more with some of the rock exposed?

Haha no although after the crash it certainly did but when running normally it's actually no different than any other tank or sump is :) this and does it always cycle are prob the most asked questions lol

Ok so while home this weekend I got the chance to drop by a friends house and had the pleasure of seeing his mangrove setup , this setup is over 10yrs old and his mangroves are literally 7ft trees lol this year though for the first time the plants actually set off their own pods and flowered , the pods are a good size now and this in my many years of reefing I've never seen on a hobbyst level , this us truly a great accomplishment and not many folks can say they've seen it run this far:)

Here's a couple crap cell phone pics I took , what he has done is what I'm striving to accomplish and his results go to show with time , consistency and a little work the reward is truly amazing :)

Enjoy these trees and use them as your guideline for what these trees can become in home aquaria:)

You can see the new pods in this pic , so cool to see happen

And a person for size reference lol

Thanks bud for the visit always a pleasure:)
