Out of Africa (picture intensive)

So after approximately a month in Q , here are my two new pets ;) and i am pretty excited about both of them

It is a juvenile black tang first i have ever seen so i may be wrong and it may turn out to be scopas/rostratum hybrid but still a beautiful unusual and rare fish to say the least ... after comparing it to many pictures im still not decided about what it is pure black tang or hybrid but as it matures i will know more..If any real Ichthyologists out there care to weigh in their opinions id love to know ;)

And even though they are found off our Natal coast(he is from natal) they are still like diamonds to us here in Cape Town so... finally after having kept one a long time ago in the early 80s i have a new baby Gem tang he put on alot of weight in Quarantine and is in a coral section with a yellow and convict tang for company and even though he is tiny 3cm ... he came with tons of attitude and is fitting in great!! A beautiful specimen of zebrasoma gemmatum

I love your big french angel, reminds me of so many dives when they seem to follow you around for a free handout! :D

judging by your success and knowledge I think the Ichthyologist is in house :thumbsup:
 
very nice tank,thought I had lots of fishes,how many gallons is this tank? I know you guys go by metric,nice video,just love it and I could stare into your videos for hours just to see what you have lurking in the corners and in the back. I will be getting my getting my achilles tomorrow so I cant wait to get it,you have some expensive fishes in there. Thanks for sharing.

Elliot- thank you! well the french angel does make it hard to ignore with his current size and personality ..hard to imagine it was my smallest fish when i got it years ago- Thank you for the compliments

ptr13 - the achilles has to be for me one of the most dramatic colourations in the surgeonfishes and definitely one of my favourites.. they can be sensitive but they need good water quality and ample room and little stress and then they become more robust... i hope you get as much enjoyment out of yours as i have had with my achilles.
 
Kinlayan, if you were to do it again, would you build your tank any differently? if so, how? I'm asking about overall and in regards to the partitioning, thanks

i am pretty happy with how the aquarium has turned out, also that i am able to keep different creatures in the same water and aquarium but without any predation to cause their demise ... so i wouldnt ever change the concept of the aquarium, however i do believe there could be better ways to design and manage the divisions but while building i didnt come up with any.

The partitions sometimes have to be moved to clean algae on the glass which means that i have to install a suitable eggcrate grill to prevent any fishes going in or out at that time this isnt diffcult but it delays cleaning by about 3 minutes per side , there maybe a better way to have done this but right now it isnt a hassle - of course the more one can blend the sides not to look like partitions and more to look like natural reef shelfs or shallows on the side of a drop off is the essence of the idea , one is looking at a cut away section of a reef with the glass being the slicing knife ;)

thank you Cannon7 and ritter6788 but bear in mind the gem is caught off our coastline so not as expensive as you pay overseas but still a pricey fish..
And the black tang /hybrid well i pay about the same for as you guys do.
 
Anyway thought i'd post something interesting , often before my lights go off in stages i get to witness something that looks like a prelude to a spawning event with my crosshatches i got the prelude but have seen them dancing in the water column in circles but didnt have an iphone on me to video it at the time... but this is the prelude to that behaviour which i have seen only twice so far ;)

please excuse the bad video quality it is a mobile phone and i wasnt expecting to shoot it :uzi: You will notice the male x hatch has a silver grey sheen added to his colour he only gets this when he begins this behaviour with the female xhatch i guess he is all excited :inlove:

well i finally found a new tiny flame angel , i can only hope he lives as long as my previous one , when i can take a pic of the little guy i will he is so fast! ;)
 
Amazing tank. I always log on here at look at these awesome builds when i'm lacking motivation with my tank.
 
Amazing tank, the French Angel is spectacular. Love seeing the Crosshatch pair as well. How is your Clown Trigger doing? I saw the note in March that you were worried he was losing weight.
 
MadOTC - thank you, i also get huge inspiration from the numerous brilliant aquariums on RC

kirkaz - thank you , yes i love the xhatch trigegr pair i see you have a pair yourself good taste in fish you have! The french like most of my fish are pets i have had them so long, Well the Clown trigger is doing ok , he/she is very old , in fact im not sure how old but it is definitely over 16 years, IT seems that the weight is fluctuating , the front of the face has become pinched abit but the appetite is still good ,the back dorsal area of the body has filled out again too, but i have noticed that , the fish gets very uncomfortable with big meals - abdomen swells and so i chop the food up finer and it doesnt get as much as it used too . I suspect something has happened with age internally but there is not much i can do about it, i have dewormed the fish and fed antibiotics too . It just is getting old and it is sad to watch that in any living creature

Yes, I'm certainly enjoying my Crosshatch pair, I enjoy all Triggers.

Sorry if I missed it somewhere in the thread, but how big is that French? Guessing 16 inches? How big is the Clown as well, surprised it's not larger at that age, looks to be under a foot?
