Out of curiosity. . .

Where/when did the word "stack" take the place of the word "aquascape?"

Just curious. Seems like here in the URS, ALL you hear with respect to rockwork is "love your stack!" but I can't really recall it being a frequent phrase in this forum back before my New Jersey hiatus (early 2008 through late 2009). I've seen it a few times in other forums but it seems especially prevalent here.

Dear DWZM,

Here at the URS we are much too addicted to have time to type out the full word "aquascape" so we opted for a shorter word. It saves us a whole 4 letters! :D You should see some of the texts we send each other... lol

(Not really sure when this actually changed over...)

Wonderful answers everyone. It's interesting to see how terminology changes in this hobby. Hopefully people understand that I started the thread as a silly jest and not out of any degree of real frustration or anything of the sort. :D

Maybe next month we'll call it a reefscape. Or a heap. Or a pile. Or a formation. I'm trying to think of something funnier to say here but I'm drawing a blank.

As I recall, it was called stack long before the term scape was used. For me personally, I heard the term scape somewhere else on RC and adopted it as it made sense to me. I use the term "stack" to refer to a specific pile of rocks, such as the "back stack" in my aquarium against the back wall. When I refer to the entire collection of rocks and their arrangement, I use the term scape, as in a vast landscape.

I think I agree with Kent's definition. In my mind, aquascape refers to the overall tank. Which corals are placed where. How the colors are mingled and contrasted. What genera and species are placed where... Stack refers only to the rock placement.

you just have to be careful not to say, "you should see my stack" when there are non-reefers around, especially if you are female.
