Oyster Eggs, Order/Flat Rate Shipping split

I was considering ordering some of the DT's Oyster Eggs to feed my corals and the system after talking with John at the meeting. The problem is that MarineDepot charges a flat rate shipping (24.99) for 1 to ??? for this product. Being that they are 19.99, ordering only one is crazy. Ordering 5 or even 10 is more reasonable.

Is anyone interested???

I do want to move on this fairly soon, 3-6 days... I am interested at the prospect of feeding the system, and think this may solve a problem or two I have been having.

I'm also open if anyone wants to suggest alternative ordering places, or articles for alternative products. The testemonies that I read praised the OE's though.

I'm in for a pack if the shipping goes down a little. I will try and find an alternaticve source but that sounds pretty much like the other prices I have heard.

Just a thought I tryed using the Reef Chili product and it seems to work pretty good I can't remember what I paid for it but it is a siple thing to use.
 
I'm not seing the widespread interest I thought I'd see. Is anyone else feeding anything besides Reef Chili, and if so, any great recommendations?

I need to feed something.

Really depends on what you're trying to feed. I normally feed a wide variety of food items...
 
I bought mine a while back at Just Pets. Expensive, but cheaper than shipping. I don't know if they still have them, I haven't been shopping in awhile.

Fred, I hear my zoa would do better with some food, as well at those caps coloring up a tad... and the Blastos reacted funny as excess food washed over them a few days back, they tried to close up like an anenome. And then a few of those shrooms would fare better...

Scott, are you proposing I feed them skin...?

I like to feed cycop-eeze. Another good fresh food source is oysters from copps. Chop em up for corals, leave em on the half shell for fish. Fish go crazy for this.

I would like to try out the oyster eggs too, but was daunted by the shipping costs.:( I even went so far as to call them because their home base is just northwest of chicago. But alas, no retail sales.:rolleyes:

I am not sure that I have seen any solid proof that fancy high dollar coral food is any better than flake/fishpoo.

In any case, if for some reason oyster eggs are ordered, count me in on an ounce for twentywhatever dollars.:eek2: :eek2: :eek2: I at least want to see what all the buzz is about.

I'm a huge proponent of feeding corals. So much so, in fact, that when my tanks are fully stocked, I generally target-feed most of my corals 1-2 times daily.

True zoas generally do not feed on solid foods. They absorb trients from the water columb (a la Xenia). Palythoa and Protopalythoa I believe do actively feed. The ones I picked up from Advance at the last meeting have a very strong feeding response. Zoas likely won't gain much from the oyster eggs, though the palys would.

Blastos definitely need to be fed. I used to feed mine every day, though I have noticed some strange feeding reactions to certain items (as have others). Mysis shrimp and brine shrimp seem to be favored. Cyclop-eeze evokes a strange response...blastos seem to not "like" them. I don't know why. I did notice they were quite inclined to eat "plankton" as well (frozen Bio-Pure). I think the oyster eggs may be on the small side for blastos though.

Acropora and Montipora I think would benefit from oyster egg feeding. I used to feed mine (and will again once the tank is really going) with a mixture of oyster eggs, cyclop-eeze and phytoplankton, sometimes mixed with baby brine shrimp (if I was hatching) and mysis juice. AFAIK, most of these types of corals are active bacterial consumers and should gain some nutritional value from these items.

A lot of mushrooms will actively feed as well...again though, I think a lot of it is going to be larger food items than the oyster eggs. A lot of anecdotal reports state that a lot of corals feed on fish poop (mushrooms, goniopora, etc.).

I also used the oyster eggs to feed small clams, and while I can't say that it helped, it certainly didn't hurt anything, as a mixture of the oyster eggs and phyto seemed to be consumed and their growth rate was excellent.

Honestly, I didn't see much of a need to feed anything in there. The Blastos would appreciate it, as would the other corals I mentioned, but I think the issues you've had with the Montipora and some of the other corals should be figured out before endeavoring to add any other factors into the tank.

Have you made any progress on those? There were some nice pieces there...

I cut the lights back a bit, and raised them up a few inches... then got on my knees and prayed to the tank god of happiness, then added alk and calc.

Maybe it's cuz my towel is to far away.
 
i suggested the oyster eggs from a thread i had read in the sps section a while back where many of the BB reefers were finding that in ultra clean, overskimmed, under stocked tanks they were finding that many of their sps would lighten in color and not grow well. the reports in that thread were favorable toward the reaction of the sps to the oyster eggs. i personally do not target feed anything but my LPS corals (about 1x/week), but i do not have a low nutrient system. there is plenty of dissolved nutrients for my shrooms and zoas which in general like rcs said do not need or even take target feeding. i was just thinking after seeing jasons tank and observing his corals, that maybe more input was in order. oyster eggs are supose to be the correct size for SPS however, for the lps in his system mysis and cyclops would work fine. realize though this was one visit, and just a speculative solution to try. with his skimmer and all that cheato maybe they are hungry?????????

Just stick a finger in his tank and you will quickly see who gets the bulk of the food in the tank. Those piranha clowns are NASTY. Don't see why so many of you keep the mean little buggers. The oyster eggs may never get to the corals in his tanks.

Well said John. I do skim a decent amount, and pretty consistant to. I'm not sure if I qualify for being understocked though. I also dosed iron for the Macro. I turned off the pump, and fed live brine and Cyclops (frozen) last night. I will do this again next week. I kicked the anti=phos back on as well. Gotta keep ta keep that HA at bay.
