It also kills mosquitoes and severely lessened the outbreaks of malaria in Africa. Of course, since it's been banned malaria epidemics have increased immensely, which has been blamed on global warming. Of course, it is odd that the malaria instances have directly coincided with the use and subsequent ban of DDT...yet you won't find that in any pro-global warming press release...

I agree with Fred!!!

Who cares if a few kids are born with flippers for arms. They will be better suited to swim in the reef tanks then.

additionally, Cancer is just something the man made up to keep us under control with their mind waves.

More DDT.... a can in every home!

That wasn't DDT, it was thalidomide that caused major limb abnormalities. Supposedly DDT caused the eggs of birds, particularly those higher up the food chain, to be very brittle. This was blamed as a cause of the drop in the numbers of eagles for instance. There is no question though that DDT saved more lives than just about any other chemical ever produced. Was it worth it to save birds? I don't know. Maybe we ought to ask those in Africa and southeast asia.

I haven't been into Aquatic Imports in awhile. I'll have to stop in there one of these days. As far as Just Pets, I think it has shown some real improvement. Some of their staff is definitely not that knowlegable, but recently when I've been in there they have shown a willingness to listen and one was even asking me for advice. That shows they are trying to learn. I've gotten some of my nicest LPS corals there. Every now and then they get in some pretty good LPS corals. It's pretty close to me though so it's easy to drop in periodically. Usually I don't buy anything but when they have some better stuff I grab it up.

I believe that DDT is banned in the US but is still quite frequently used in third world countries. Its cheap to produce and easy to use. We have other pesticides here in the US that don't bioaccumulate like DDT did. ReeferAl was correct it did cause a weakening of shells in bald eagles, cormorants and other birds that consumed large quantities of fish. It makes sense for the US to ban the stuff when we have alternatives and the "wealth" to use them. Countries not so well off have to make the decision to use it or not and most of them still use it to some degree. Apparently releasing a couple gazillion Gambusia affinis (mosquitofish) is a viable alternative.
