Peeping Banggai Fry

If they still have the yolk sack that means they are not yet fully developed. I have no experience with this but i guess that they should be ok. The yolk sack is their food. Just wait it out until the yolk sack disappears and then try to feed bbs again.

Are they like a orange blob????? if so, you need to have the water move them ever so gently.....

Our male released the fry in the DT last night.... :( the 2 females are chasing him, trying to get him to hold again this morning......
It is so difficult trying to catch him, our tank is an in wall build.......and its 8'x3'x2'.........
We are going to put the fish trap back in the tank this morning, and hopefully we can catch all 3 of them, and put them in the breeder tanks.....

no they are not "eggs" still, they are little miniature versions of the parents with yellowish yolk sacks still attached. They are not quite as developed as the fry pics I've been seeing here. And sadly my phone is not uploading my pics properly to photobucket. But I will get pics soon.

they are still not eating, but all 18 are still swimming around well. :) They were "weaker" yesterday when they came out, and so I had the water current set to almost nothing. But last night and today I got to turn it up a little bit and they bulk of them are now swimming as a little school together.

they are so cute though. I'm already thinking of how to raise them once they get bigger, hopefully they will start wlswimming stronger soon and I won't have to worry about losing them to an overflow.

Hey shandy, did you have any problems with the babies dying after catching them to sell.I had 8 to die. They were around 4 months old,I still have 7 that the potential buyers backed out because of to much flow or other fish would eat them.

this is the best I can do to get you a picture. There is another one on my account. If you can't see it I'll see about uploading it better on a computer, this is from my phone.

- Thats a great pic however the fry really aren't developed yet. They were released too soon. Hope they survive though.

- Nope. I never had that problem. Out of all that i have sold, only 2 have been reported to have died but this was not because of transport. They were put in such small betta boxes that the more dominant one killed the other one. All others from both batch 1 and 2 are all alive and have actually grown bigger in their new homes. The remaining 2 fry that i kept for myself have also been transferred to my nano tank and are doing very well. I think your fry are still experiencing SFS and in which case the only way to avoid that is to feed them BBS or any other food that is enriched with HUFA. You can try using selcon or Aminomega. I myself use aminomega. Good luck snakemanvet.

- Thats a big tank. Wish i could have a big tank like that. However my wife will never allow me to get a big tank like that. Atleast yours have kept on breeding. My pair until now haven't bred again. I actually caught my PT already since i think the PT is stressing out my Banggai pair. Hopefully now that he's out they will resume breeding again. Good luck edandsandy! Post more pics! :)

all 18 are alive and eating BBS now. Only one looks like a runt...and may not make it. But so far they are swimming with the fastest current I could provide and not being over powered by it.

so far so good. I don't know if the premature expulsion will be a bad thing. After all some people raise the eggs. But I'm gonna take it one day at a time. These things sure are cute. One can easily fit on my pinky nail. Hehe.

I'm still puzzeled as to why the male held for 28 days and they were still under developed, he probably would have held on well into the mid 30's at this rate, cause today would have been 30, and they still have a large yolk to live off of. They look nothing like the more developed ones that have been posted.

When did you start counting? Counting should start on the 1st day you see the male holding eggs and has stopped eating.

Well good luck with the fry. I do hope they make it. Keep us posted on their development.

yes, I don't know any other day to satrt counting, so I'm going by when he first had them and no longer ate, plus I watched the courtship dance for two hours that morning, and by afternoon he had eggs, then we wrote it on the calender, it was nov. 8th. He released them when I was cleaning the holding refuge on dec. 4th. Long time no food. :)

now the runt has started to join the school. :)

they were in there, I could see them poke out his mouth, but only like 2 of them at a time. Then they came out looking not as developed as both of your two (peoples) babies. It is interesting to see them and document the (slightly) earlier phase of development.

after last night I'm down to 14. The runt died, and then I think 3 others got sucked into the overflow cause the mesh on it was slightly raised too much. I did my first WC on them and now all the remaining 14 are swimming strong and eating well when I feed BBS. Lets hope I don't lose any more strong ones.

Why don't you just use an aerator with a foam filter? That way no fry will get sucked in especially now that they are still underdeveloped. :)

two reasons.

one, I don't have any...and it's not a large body of water so I wouldn't want heparameters to go out of whack.

which leads to two...

they are currently plumbed with the main tank so that their refuge doesn't need any filtration; it can simply utilize the main tanks filtration and skimming abilities. This way all I have to do is clean the bottom by syphoning it from time to time, and when I feed the fry, what they don't eat simply flows into the main display and is food for my corals.

but mainly it's because I'm worried about the water params being off and killing the fry, and cause I don't have any of that stuff...nor any money to get I. Once the fry grow out a bit I will feel more comfortable with their ability to stay healthy and I will move them to progressivly bigger tanks, which I do have.

I wouldn't have a place to put/hang that... :( Also, again, I am strapped for money. I just spent what I had on a new BBS hatchery...that way I can have two, one always providing food while the other is hatching more. All in all I'm just using what I have laying around the house/old equipment.

yesterday I woke up to one dead bay, to bring the total down to 13, and today there were no losses. :) The 13 are eating well every time we feed. My G/F just loves these little guys and is so happy to help (cause I usually just tell her not to mess with my corals ever).

thanks for all the help, and info. I'll keep everyone as up dated as I can, as long as no one minds me hijacking the thread for a while.

as of now they look like they have out grown their yolk sacks, and are now staying full from our feeding. So I ask now, how often do you feed? We feed a couple times a day and night just a little squirt of BBS. They eat it right up, and the rest return to the tank and are washed out of the HOB refuge.

so far I'm amazed that this many are doing this well. Thanks again for all the help.

You can feed as much as they will eat. I myself feed 2x a day around 200ml of bbs.

As for the cage, you can attach some stryfoam (or anything that floats) to the edges of the cage to get it to float as well.

wow that's a lot more food than mine would consume, I guess mine are still very small. I feed just a couple of ml at a time but I do it throughout the day and night.
