Peeping Banggai Fry

Wow thats nuts. How long have you been trying to get them to breed like this?

About 5-6 months. 1st few times the male carried but he aborted them within 8 days. I almost gave up until one day i noticed he was still holding for more than 20 days already. Thats when I knew he was ready to be a father. hehehe

i plan to breed banggai cardnals, any advice?

My advise is to keep the male well fed before he starts carrying. Take note of when he starts to carry eggs and when you reach about 20-21 days, start preparing the holding cage for the fry and the enriched artemia as the male will release the fry once you catch him. Good luck! :)

thanks. I plan to set up a mangrove swamp with long spine sea urchins for a natural biotope for the new fry. I like mangroves any way.

what ratio of male to female do you have? Some species have many males, and one female; do banggai cardnal fish do that, or like to pair up pair?

I had a pair that used to breed quite regularly. At the time I was using an overflow box. When I saw the male left the fry go I would collect them from the back side of the box. My method of raising was simply putting them in my fuge full of critters and using a pipette to add cyclopeeze near them once they could eat it. I was actually this way. Congrats and best of luck! Its always fun seeing the little stick figure fishies swimmin 'round

I have a single pair of Banggai cardinals. 1 male :1 female. They tend to pair up and kill the others that are left out. So if you plan to get more than 2 make sure to watch them and once you see a pair forming remove the other banggais from the tank.

The mangrove tank sounds like a great idea. I was thinking about the same thing. Its just that i already have 2 tanks running and I would prefer not to setup another one. heheh!

Thanks! They are actually in my sump now with a lot of pods. However I chose to put them in a holding cage as it is easier to monitor them. Im actually weaning them to eat prepared foods already and so far each one is looking bigger and bigger every day. I think they like my diy food. Right now im mixing the prepared food with some artemia as i am still finishing the last batch of my artemia. And yes, it really is so fulfilling to see baby banggais swimming around!

hows it going???

Ive lost another 3 fries over the weekend. They have started to become aggressive and they attack the smaller ones. I had to put the smaller ones in a separate cage from the other bigger ones. I thought it would take longer before they started to attack the smaller ones but it happened just around the 2 weeks old mark. So far out of the 11, 5 have died and i have 6 remaining. Hopefully i don't lose any other fry.

Nice! Congrats as well! I think they will only eat live food until you slowly wean them on to frozen food. Good luck! Just make sure to enrich the newly hatched bbs otherwise a lot of them will suffer sfs.

You can enrich it with either of these 3:

1. Brightwell Aminomega
2. Selcon
3. ESV Freeze Dried Phytoplankton

I personally use 1 and 3.

Congrats! You can use the omega-3/6 hufa. You can start enriching the BBS around the 2nd day after they hatched cause that is when they will have developed their mouths and anus. Good luck again!

Updating pics. Remaing 6 from batch 1 are doing ok. Already eating prepared foods. They are already about 1 inch long except for the runt of the group which is still alive in a hatching cage.

Sorry for the blurry pics. Just used my phone to take pics.
