Peeping Banggai Fry

Sad day for me...the runt of the remaining 6 which i placed in a separate holding cage looks like it wont survive. Its already lying down on the bottom of the cage and breathing heavily. Truly is survival of the fittest. He was actually only 1/2 the size of the other 5. The remaining 5 on the other hand look ok and are constantly out and about.

:sad1: sorry to hear about the runt!
Is this your first run on rearing the fry?
Our male is holding eggs again, we have noticed him under a huge colony of birds nest. BUT, there is another banggai that will chase him around the tank.
How did you remove your male?

They are doing great,so far I still have 19. After taken a pic I counted them in the pic and come up with 19,one more than I thought I had.My fry are still eating live bbs and frozen bbs.I will post some more pics later.
edandsandy I chased my male into a plastic container,He released the babies as soon as I lifted the container out of the tank.Do it while the lights are off, that way you want cause to much stress.

A few updated pics

Yep! This was the first batch of fry i have ever had. At first i had 11 but lost around 6 already in a span of 1-2 months. Only 5 remaining now.
I just used a net to catch him and once i caught him he immediately released the fry in the net.

Im not actually sure. But i estimate that when I got them they were already 4 months old and when they started to breed they were already 4 months in my tank. So approximately 8 months old when they started. But it took another 3 months before the male successfully held his clutch to full term. So thats about 11 months in total.

Ok. Do the pair often hang together? because i have two in my tank for about 5 months. Ones bigger than the other ad more dominant, im thinking he will be the male. They dont hang together though so idk if they will mate

Yes they do hang together all the time.

I don't think Banggais experience the sex change as with percs and other marine fishes. They are either born Male or born female. You have to check the small fins in between the pectoral fin and the anal fin.

1 Small Fin = Female
2 Small Fins = Male

We found 1 baby banggai in the over flow box tonight!
So we set a 5g holding tank, we have some enriched BBS we feed the seahorses but they seem so big compared to the baby banggai!
Sorry, I'm not trying to hijack the thread
I just wanted to share the good news
If all goes well we will start a thread.

Hey Shandy, how are the babies doing.Mine are still doing good.Just past the 3 week mark.

The remaining 5 are all doing well. They have huge bellies all the time. However i noticed that sometimes they wouldn't eat the prepared food ive been giving them so im mixing it up with some BBS again. Im not sure if they got tired of the prepared food or it was still too big for their little mouths but i just want them to keep on growing so i decided to mix it up with BBS again just to make sure they are eating something.

I just purchased several hatching cages last night and tonight will try to catch my male again. I was looking at him last night but i couldn't really see any peeping fry yet so i was reluctant to catch him cause he might release the fry when they aren't ready yet.

Im glad all your fry are doing well. Im still envious of the fact that you have more fry than me. hahah! What are you feeding them now? Have you been able to wean them off bbs already?
