Peeping Banggai Fry

yeah I'm probably gonna get some selcon as soon as I can. But I'm proud to say that it's 3 weeks today and they are eating chopped up mysid shrimp. So that should help with the hufa's. So far there has been no sign of SFS...and that's amazing because we turn the room lights on and off all the time, as well as there being a TV right next to there HOB tank. And they have no problem with the changing lights.

I'm wondering if it would be any less chance of SFS in G2 and G3 batches...cause I know mine are ORA, and most likely the parents are G2 or more....so I wonder if SFS can be weaned out.

new pics of my babies from a few days ago...they are currently getting little white spots on some of the larger fins...they grow up so fast.

sorry about the weirdness of the pics. It's not edited, and the strange "painted" effect in the background is from the Macro lens I am trying to use on my regular camera lens. It will literally only focus on a very narrow depth of field...so the fish not in the focal spot are all crazy blurry.

My male just let go of 32 fry a few days ago. Put them in my refugium and put netting on the outflow to keep them in. I feed them frozen BBS soaked in phyto and zoe. With a little flow, they eat it without problem. I'm hoping they all make it.

Thanks Shandy. I agree. He's a bad boy!!Mama too...lol. I do take great care of them though, and keep them well fed. These fry are growing like weeds.

So here's my problem, I have gone through 6 banggai's all of which have gone from eating a lot and then they stop eating, then breathing heavy, then dying... I want to breed them but I'm afraid I'm doing something really wrong or that they were caught with cyanide... Any words of advice or where I can get 6 more cheap or trade around Chicago that will live?

Try to get tank raised ones. Many who have tried to get wild caught ones usually experience this. This is probably because of the virus that affects only banggai cardinals and usually they get this from holding tanks during transport.

My first batch of 18 and second batch of 23 have grown and gone to new homes.my male is ready to release again in a couple of days.Has anyone here ever heard their female make the poping noises, she does every once in awhile.

Congrats snakemanvet! Yeah ive heard that popping sound a lot of times. Its kinda weird actually. I dunno if shes just doing a mating call or what but i guess its normal. So how many batches have you had already?

My pair still havent bred again after the 2nd batch. Kinda getting frustrating as there are no fish that bother them in the tank. You think banggai breeding could be seasonal?

Yes we have heard it as well, I think it is some kind of mating ritual.....

Hey, just an update...
One of our males in main DT have been holding eggs for almost 3 weeks now, we are going to "try" and get him out tonight, I so hope we can catch him.......
And today I noticed our other male baby is holding eggs for the first time!
I so hope we can rear all these babies! They are so much fun to watch grow up!

I've enjoyed reading through this thread, keep it up!! can't wait to start bangaii's again but I'm probably still a year away from getting into that aspect of the hobby.

After 3 batches my banggai pair stopped breeding. Not sure why as they were really healthy. About a month ago my male passed away. Was a sad day for me...my female is lonely now. Not really sure why he died but probably of old age. Oh well, i guess thats life.

Recently was able to acquire a couple of tank bred juvis from the only other person here in P.I. to be able to breed banggais. Was able to get 6 but 1 jumped out of the tank when I was out. So now im left with 5 juvis. 3 are in separate boxes and 2 are in my mangrove fuge. Im still unable to determine their sex as theyre still too small to see which ones are male and which ones are female. I will also be reacquiring one of the juvis from my previous batches which went to a friends tank. I do hope i can pair them up soon and be able to breed again.

Sorry to hear about your loss... Hopefully you will have a pair breeding again soon.
I have been unsuccessful on removing the male from our DT....looks like he released the fry in the DT.....I looked everywhere for a survivor and could not find one....
We have one male in the 40g still holding, this is his first batch, hopefully he will hold them to full term and we will have more babies :)

Bringing this back up because of this:

Found this guy tonight. He swam around for about an hour and a half. I went to change clothes and he vanished. The male is still holding.
I'm going to go ahead and get a breeder box but the biggest issue is food. Any chance of survival feeding frozen/flakes/pellets? I never expected him to hold till they hatched, since he is still quite young, so needless to say I'm not prepared.

I have a very large, aggressive, cleaner shrimp in that tank that will make short work of the fry so I don't have much to lose. I figure they'll have a better chance with me than it.

Any suggestions appreciated.

How long does the male hold the babies once they hatch?

I saw the first yolk sack with eyes on Wednesday night, the above pic was Thursday and I'm still seeing activity in his mouth today.
I didn't keep real accurate records but this will be within a day or two.
Laid Aug 16th
Hatched Sept 13th (28 days)
Still holding Sept 17th (32 days)

My LFS actually had brine shrimp eggs. Just hatched my first batch of BBS. I did a makeshift hatchery with what I had on hand. Using 20 oz bottled water bottles. They will be going into a container in the frig and I'm starting another one.

John that seems like a really long time for banggai to hold onto their brood. I have not spawned them but have read that most will release around 25days, and if they do not release it seems a good idea to force the male to release to enable him to feed again.
One thing that would cause a delay in hatching and release would be, if your tank temperature was significantly lower than that of others who have raised these fish. Even then 28 days to hatch seems like an extremly long time.
Congrats on breeding these, we need more captive breed banggai, they are somewhat hard to come by. I am on a waiting list with two online stores trying to get some.
