Peoplw who have/had red bugs, AEFW, Monti Nudi's, etc...

Where do you think you guys got these hitchhikers? From a wild acro or transmitted on a frag from another's tank?

I'm just curious to know how relatively safe it is to put frags from other tanks. Right now, I'm scared of putting any new animals in my tank, period.

ive got red bugs and have had them for about 9+ months now.... i havent treated cuz they stay on my valida which is fine and growing great with nice color....

anyways the only place i can trace them back to is my LFS....

cuz at the time it was the only place i was getting acros from i hadnt gotten any frags at that time from anyone yet....

WayneL333 - Quite honestly, I don't really trust getting corals from anyone without doing a QT and dips. The Red Bugs & AEFW's taught me a lesson I won't soon forget.

Thanks for your answers. Sara, do you QT and do dips? Or just one or the other?

I have both AEFW and redbugs. I think they came from fellow reefers. I did not do a QT/dip proceedure previously. Never again!

I begin my battle this weekend.

WayneL333 - I will now QT all incoming corals for at least 4 weeks before adding them to my tank. I just finished up 5 weeks of QT and Levamisole treatments on my Acros 2 weeks ago and a couple months before that I did 3 Interceptor treatments in QT as well.

I have not added anything new for 2 weeks, but all SPS will get 4 Levamisole treatments as well as 3 Interceptor treatments. All other corals (non-SPS) will hit the Tropic Marin Coral Cure for dips over the 4 week QT.

I know from handling corals a several wholesellers in LA, Monti Nudi's and Zoa Nudi's are all over their systems. Never seen Red bugs or AEFW in their systems.

How did the lev treatments go for you Sara? Good i hope. I just did a dip in TMPCC on my acros. I'm doing 5-6 dips over 4 weeks. The AEFW just peel off the acros, great to see. Redbugs float to the top in about 10 min. Great stuff!

I had redbugs. Did three treatments and they are gone. Only two weeks after treating for redbugs, I found AEFW. I am going to do a 5-4 week QT using Levamisole or TMPCC next week. I think they came from fellow reefers. I did not do a QT/dip proceedure previously. Never again!

impur - The treatments seemed to have gone well, but it's too early to call it a complete success. I did lose about 4 corals, but that's not too bad considering 5 weeks of life in QT.

Hope the TMPCC dips work for you. Are you doing QT and dips or just dips and returning to the display? I too enjoyed watching the quick death using that product. I just figured it would be too time consuming and costly to use it to treat all my Acro's.

SaraB- When you figured the concentration of levamisole in ppm for the dip did you use the weight of the pill to get the con. (like the redbug treatment) or did you use the amount of levamisole that each pill contained.

by the way out of the 4 acro you lost how many did you treat. i will be treating all 30 of mind.
thank
brian

Levamisole comes in a powder form and you just add RO water to the plastic bottle up to 500ML. I used a little over 50ML for each treatment in about 9 gallons of water. Someone else had told me how much of the product to use so that I would not have to mess with the ppm calculations.

I treated 28 acro's and tossed out 4 of those, so that's not too bad. I had also added a few Monti's in the QT for treatment that I was concerned about with Nudi's just for safe measure.

I'm doing QT and dips. I've got a friend holding 10 frags and i surely don't want to experience this again.

Great comment Sara, I SECOND THAT ALL THE WAY!

the form of levamisole that i found is in a pill not a power. each pill contains 0.184g of levamisole. has anyone try the pill from of levamisole?

I'm guessing about mine.

Red bugs, unsure.
Monti nudis, came from an ocean aquacultured piece, from a non-local LFS. Sweet piece, but interceptor and a quick iodine dip didn't wasn't enough. Sadly, a month or so after introducing it the piece was doing quite poorly and I would have wondered ... had I used QT. Pretty sure on this source.

I've also gotten into the habit of putting all mounts/LR substrate into a fish only tank. I'd love to have the hitchhikers - just not in my display tank. When getting it home, I [sadly] cut off the base immediately off every coral that I can do that with - and they go with my old Maroon, away from my stony corals.

I wouldn't trust my neighbor the nun who is my best friend enough to put frags from their tank directly into my main display. That isn't because I don't trust nuns(please forgive me if any Catholics read this I am just trying to make a point :) ) or I don't trust my neighbor or best friend but IMO occasionally people that have these pests, even seasoned knowledgeable sps keepers, don't realize they have them and pass them on without knowing. This of course leaves the ultimate responsibility on the buyer which may not be fair or right but that's the way it is.

FWIW, Chris

Great point.
Often folks who pass them along are unknowing about them.

It does get back to QT/treatment being our own responsibility - though that has pretty much stopped my `why not add one more frag' fun of the past.

That said, it's a shame so many vendors/etc seem to [IMO] ignore the issue. [Though it does make the ones that do pay attention to pests all that more valuable]
