The locals use white coral rubble to make signs on the side of the road in the black lava

Well that's it. The vacation of a lifetime. We had an absolute blast. Was hard to come home.

Awesome Pictures! I love Maui. It's been 4 years since I was there and would love to get back next year.

Personal Favorite - I can't believe you had time to teach the trigger to "roll over" in just a few days ;):

greg, your shots are incredible. maybe you said already, got caught up in the photos, when were you there? my wife and I were only a few miles north of the Maui Prince on the Wailea/Kihei border in mid April. I'm guessing you were there earlier if so many whales were around. We caught the tail end of it. Still quite a spectacle.

Could you elaborate on your photography set up?

You are right. It was the end of January. I just got around to posting the thread on RC. :o

Some of the snorkeling pictures were taken with a simple Olympus SW-720 waterproof point and shoot. It's an awesome camera. I recommend it very highly for utilitarian use. Out of the box, it's waterproof to 15 feet and can take a drop on concrete at 4 feet. http://www.dpreview.com/news/0601/06012602olympus_720sw.asp

The bulk of the shots were taken with my DSLR an Olympus E-330 with Olympus housing and the 14-54mm Zuiko lens

Nice pics Greg. You make me miss Hawaii. I was hoping to get back there this year, but it's not going to work out. :(

Great pictures  If you ever go back to Maui, book yourself a dive on the backside of Molokini ;)

Is the back side a wall? I think that is the last dive I did in Hawaii... awesome dive! I'm always happy with Maui Dive Shops when I use them.

Yup, it's great wall dive :D

Nice pics! We dove the Big Island earlier this month. Kailua-Kona had amazing diving. If you haven't already been there I'd highly rec a trip back just to spend a few days there (plus side--there are a TON of dive shops there :) ) The night time Manta Dive is also incredible.

Thanks again for sharing. Your Maui pics have made my "which island next" decision a little easier!

Wow! Thanks for sharing! Those underwater shots are beautiful! How do you get so close to the fish? I usually only get tail end shots.

If you're snorkeling, it's hard to get anything but tail end. If you're diving and still getting tail-end only, then you aren't being still enough. Patience and very slow deliberate motions.

Awesome pics Greg. My wife and I were on Maui at the end of April and I recognize a lot of the shots you took. How did you find the snorkeling on Molokini? I read the shallow side was 35 feet deep, and I am not a great swimmer so we didn't take that excursion. Some of your photos from there don't look all that deep. I like that. When you step off the boat into the ocean, is it deep right there? And did you have to swim to shallower water? Thanks.

Yeah, when you get off the boat it's about 30 feet probably. Then you swim to the shore and it gets shallow very fast. You spend all your time in the shallow area. If you take the boat that leaves from the Maui Prince Hotel they have two people in the water as life guards as well. But the depth doesn't matter anyway because you aren't going to be standing on the corals!!!!!! Just wear one of the flotation vests they provide and you'll be fine.

thanks for the pix, they were absolutely awe inspiring. i will make it to hawaii one day, also to australia and japan! wondering how much the underwater camera retails for?
