Lowering salinity for larva

Thank you for posting your routine! That is very helpful.

This is probably a dumb question from a relatively new breeder, but I don't ever recall reading in Wilkerson or Hoff to lower the salinity in the larva tank. What is the benefit to this? Does it increase survival of the larva?

thanks kathy,

lowering salinity is in wilkersons book. she doenst know why but it appears to inc. survival rate.
 
Thanks embryoguy! It has been a while since I read Wilkerson's book, I must have completely missed that.

Hopefully that will help my success rate go up!

matt my snagger really worked well! :)

at 45 min, most were in the snaggger before i even shined the flashlight, so another 15 min of flashlight i picked up most of them. i saw some straggers inside the tank but decided to pull the snagger to get the majority into the larvae tank.

can we get a few more pics of your snagger? i would like to have one built and ready incase my fish decide they dont want to use the tile im going to use. and with the success your having seems like you have a solid design

honestly though, its not my idea, i would ask some of the other breeders, kathy, ie.. for there snagger plans. theres is prob more effective than mine.
 
ok so is that like an acrylic box like a specimin container with a piece of acrylic as a spacer? and i see the powerhead but where is the outlet on the powerhead going. i see the suction on the bottom but i dont see where the water exits.

and what kind of light is that?

its actually a cpr intank refugium :) and yes it is acrylic. the black divider is a spare part i had laying around from a filter. it has slits in it as you can see. i also cut apart a brine shrimp net and aligned it over the slits. there is a hole from where the rio 40 exits. that was premade. it was designed that way to work as a internal refugium. i put an adapter on the outlet so i can adjust the flow of the pump. i cut out a small square as the inlet. the light is a simple moon light. im going to switch it to a white light though.

but like i stated, this is my first attempt to collect them, so i can not know for sure how reliable this setup is. i would advise asking the other seasoned breeders with more experience and expertise in this area on the premise of a snagger. i think theres is prob. more effective.
 
Yeah i am ontop of that i may also make something out of spare acrylic i have laying around. just incase and add a small power head sucking lightly from the bottom with an outlet thru the otherside with a nice prefilter sponge in there also.
 
keef, sounds you have a good idea on it. :)

i tested the flow with some flakes/pellets. i tried to achieve good glow going in, but within the chamber i wanted to make sure it was not a whirlpool.
 
My fish lay eggs on a removable rock now, but I like the snagger better, because the male does such a nice job hatching the eggs. When I harvested eggs, I always had fungus problems, and many of them died or did not hatch.
