Picked up 3 small Maxima clams, need some care tips.

Well, I went over to my LFS, Tropicorium, yesterday purchased 3 small aquacultured Maxima clams. The price was VERY GOOD, $27 per clam so I had purchase them.

I placed one of the Maxima's in my main tank under T5's, and the other two in my smaller tank lit by MH.

Now, the clams are about 2" in size so am I correct to assume that they will need feeding until they are large enough for the symbiotic zoozanthelle algae to properly feed them?

I currently feed my tank Reef Nutrition Rotifers along with Reef Booster Amino acids, will this be sufficient for baby clams?

I currently have two clams, Teardrop Maxima and Derasa, that are growing and healthy. I have had the Teardrop Maxima for about 6 years now, 9 months under T5's on the sandbed.

I would say you are good. the whole feeding calms under X-size is a big myth sure they wont mind a feeding eveynow and then but as long as you have stong light and fish in the tank your good. I have a ora Maxima and a ora Derasa both about the same size are you have. and i have had them for about 6-8 mths now and have never gone out of my way to feed them and they are doing great putting down new growth and very reactive to movement. Hope this helps a little

I never feed my clams. I have a 1.5 inches clam at this time and it is doing great witout feeding. I only feed flake food to my tank. The number one killer of clams in novice hand is parasitic snails. You need to make sure that your clams are parasite free. Ask or read more about them if you don't know what I am talking about. Repeated manual removal is best IMO. I find them in clams at the store all the time, even tank raise ones. When a novice clam keeper report that the condition is fine, the clams are fine and growing for a few months then up and died, it is most likely because of the parasitic snails.

Great tips everyone!

Are you guys placing the clams directly in the sand or one the rockwork? I know with my large maxima I have a flat piece of tile under the sand for it to attach too.

I leave mine in the sand or on a tile or old clam shell that way if i have to move them or get rid of them it will be a lot easier then trying to cut them off and that can be risky

+1 I put mine on a small piece of live rock on the bottom of the tank. Once it attaches, I move it to where I want it to be.

VERY nice Maxima. Is it really that blue in person?

I have mine on the sand. I do have 250 or 400 W MH so they got plenty of light. Lower in the sand will be better for viewing also. Once there are no problem, then I can put them on the rock work or on some corals. Here is a picture of my clam on my M. cap

The slight blue is just a trick of the light. In person, it is white and black. I have blue Maxima too.

Minh...... I was wanting to do what you did with your maxima. How does your M. Cap do with having a clam on it?

I though I answer this but I guest not.
I just put the Maxima on top of the M. cap. It attached in about 1 week. The coral died right under the clam but otherwise not affected. I really like the color combination so I did as above.

does tropicorium have any more maximas for that price? do they get them in often? If so I'm driving over there for sure and picking up beauties like that. Only 30 min. away from me

Yes, they have quite a few left and even some really nice larger ones. Just be sure to free up a couple hours as they literally have MILLIONS of corals.

Oh yeah, TONS of rainbow acans and every other acan out there. They have every Zoo and Acan you can think of in massive quantities.

Here is the LFS's website: http://www.tropicorium.com/

It would be well worth the drive!
