A few pics to document what I am working with. Is that Bryopsis? I have already spot treated the rock with peroxide some to heavily as you can see from the super green growth, those rock where white two day ago because I scrubbed the ....I have got it knocked down for the moment but wanted to post something for future reference. Thanks for everyone input, maybe I knocked it down in time it is a really new tank. TodAy is 32 days in.

We can manage nutrients different going forward and see if that works, or install preventative clean up crews, or as I do in my bowl do nothing and just repeat if/when needed. Id be scraping that growth on the glass with a razor vs dosing for it, but Id hit the rocks as needed for sure.

not sure if its bryopsis Im not really that good at id. thanks so much for posting with pics!!

Red Wiry Turf Algae

Red Wiry Turf Algae

hey guys

i have been reading the post and wow some cases have had a remarkable recovery.

@Brandon : thank you for starting this thread it has been really helpful, was getting desperate

wanted to check with you if anyone has had success with Red Wiry Turf Algae

I did a crazy thing and pulled out some of my most infected rocks and put them on a quarantine tank (i did this when i was about in page 10 of the thread :headwally: )

1. did a soak for 4 minutes and rinsed with SW
2. put them on the quarantine tank and they have been sitting there for 36 hours, added 1 ml of peroxide every 12 hours

My question is, i know by now all my good bacteria is dead in those rocks read algae has become white ( i will post pics later tonight)

should i start getting back in to the main tank the rocks that were treated one by one?
my fear is that my ammonia will spike once i introduce them in to the tank

thank you all in advance
E

that is a nice doggie! Nice to meet you

yes this works on red wiry algae that was what was wrecking my tank. usually multiple treatments are required to beat it back permanently. this algae takes several days after treatment to die off, and its possible it wont die off in the way you treated it due to being too diluted...the peroxide

this type of algae requires direct undiluted application to work, and then afterwards the dieoff takes about six days. you know it worked when the algae target starts to turn bright pink, that means its dying. that happens by the third day, if your application was strong enough and long enough.

you lost zero bacteria during your treatment, it will not affect anything in any dose. peroxide is a weak antibiotic its commonly thought to kill filtration bacteria in our tanks and it does not. so you are good there

you would lift out any rocks that has it on there, and apply peroxide from a new bottle right on the wiry algae tufts, outside the tank. leave the rock sitting on a towel for 3 mins while its soaking in. all corals you have will tolerate a 3 min emersion just fine, sometimes I leave my tank drained for 20 minutes with about 10x that much coral from varied species.

you rinse off the spot after it has sat, and place rock back in tank. algae turns bright pink in about 3-4 days, dead white in a week or two, then if any comes back in a few weeks you just retreat. it took about two years of treating every 3-4 mos to wipe this algae out of my tank. post pics along the way and thanks for joining reefcentral!

huge turnaround post of before and after tank racked with algae top to bottom, an internal tank dosing treatment lasting several weeks:

NOTE: I really didn't have much to lose at this point. The GHA would barely pull off and the grape calurpa was really holding on. I did watch the corals and fish for any changes which never happened. Results may vary of course with different corals and inverts. With 3 fish, few corals and a cleaner shrimp, I was willing to risk it. If I had hundred of dollars of corals or fish, I would be careful direct dosing the tank.

Let me tweak Brandon's comment a little. 10ml a day (5ml /12 hours) 5/6 days. The algae was still not really changing color too much. The grape calurpa did bleach out. A turkey baster blew it right off the liverock which it then just disintegrated in the water column and clouded the crap out of the tank. I figured it would swish off in a bucket.

I drained the tank. 1/2 the water went to a big tub, the other 1/2 went to 2 5 gallon buckets. One buckets I dumped an entire bottle of peroxide in. Washed the liverock off in one bucket, little scrubbing in the cracks and holes, but about 80% came right off. Rinsed it in the peroxide bucket for 5 minutes or so. Rinsed it off in the first bucket again . Put into large tub of tank water. Rescaped it when all finished.

My few fish and corals seemed much happier. Zoas that were barely opening during the hairy days were now full open. About a week later I ordered a new CUC from reef cleaners.

NOTE!!!! About a week after I got the CUC the GHA started coming back, but the CUC was able to keep it under control and we look good to go now. 95% gone now. I am also running chempure elite and replaced the CF bulb in the hood.

Chris thanks for the clarification. cuc's love cooked salad lol.

dont even scrape it off when you remove the rock for treatment, just douse the specific target area with peroxide from a new, unopened bottle and let it work its way into the algae tufts, wait three mins and rinse. if the rock has no corals, let it sit out 5 or ten minutes with a few repeat treatments since no coral will be bothered.

Got rid of dino's with H2O2

Got rid of dino's with H2O2

I only stopped dosing yesterday so anything can still happen but thought I would post my experience and some before/after shots. I had tried lights out before without much success... a little die off but not a lot. From Thursday to Wednesday, I dosed 5mL of a new bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide every night. That's about a 2mL per 10gallon dose because my estimated total volume is 25 gallon. That's probably a high estimate. During this time I didn't turn on the lights and shaded the side of the tank closest to the window, not 100% black out. I did turn the lights on once so the fish could come out and eat. I didn't have any coral in the tank yet but did have 2 firefish and a small cleanup crew of hermits and a couple margarita snails.

Feel free to ask any questions!

Thanks Brandon for your guidance!!!!! Like I said, it could be back before I'm done typing, but for now... :bounce1:

Ha! Yay I love those results. We never know if dinos will succumb but when it does its fun taking credit :) and when they don't we can blame it on unknowns lol thank you so much for posting. Mainly you took any measure before dinos really took over, and have now provided good firefish data to us with a 2:10 dosing, very helpful.

Martin,

for some reason the board is experiencing problems where your new post won't show to me. on my browser, I only see Edgar's last post, but in the nanos forum it shows you as the last poster. Please give a little time for the board to either auto correct this, or if we can't see it in another hour please try to repost. Im not sure why I cant see your post

we will beat your invasive macro algae nonetheless! See you in a bit

Caulerpa Verticillata

Caulerpa Verticillata

Right out the gate on new 55gal reef tank get this stuff from Gulf Live rock Caulerpa Verticillata. How to get rid of it is the question before it gets too far along? Its the green leafy stuff on the rocks.

Now its working fine, that is classic uncured LR looking great. It would be very easy to lift out the rock and simply spot apply peroxide where you want it to zap, no prob. Wont hurt the filter bacteria and the kill time after this easy external treatment is about 48 hours, may have to retreat since we don't know what else will come out of the rock while curing. Should make for some easy follow up pics on Monday!

Caulerpa Verticillata

Caulerpa Verticillata

Okay the pics I posted were from two weeks ago pre-cycle. the tank has now cycled and I have added fifty+ lbs of fully cured rock from a friend tearing down his system. ON Friday night I dipped the infected rocks "clams and all" I'm not worried about losing them in 9 parts tank water and 1 part hydrogen peroxide. I followed this up with removing all Caulerpa I could see. Here we are Monday morning and it appears to be growing back with a vengeance! Don't know what to do next to keep it away from my new unaffected rock....

its possible the dilution was too much and it was ineffective? we usually spot treat with no dilution, or do the underwater spot injections now that everything has been placed back in without a dedicated external treatment.

any holdfasts in the rock are sure to regenerate as they haven't been contacted with a strong enough solution yet, and even then so I expect some follow up treatments required. that or get a naso tang...we have cleaned tanks of invasive macros many times though it can be done no prob. an undiluted test run would help

take out one rock with the regrowth on it, and pour peroxide right on the growth areas, let sit two mins, put back in tank let me know how the regrowth does on it
