I want to add a Copperband Butterflyfish – both to help with an emerging aphasia issue and to add some color to the tank.

Here’s what I have:

Display: 50 gallon long
-50-60+ lbs live rock
- 40-50lbs substriaght (depth varies from 2 – 4” deep)
- Various LPS (trumpets, open brain, Kenya tree ect..)
- A few small colonies of Zoas
- A couple of smallish frags of misc SPS

Sump – 15 gallon with Skimmer
Fuge – 15 gallon with 4in deep sand bed, rock and Cheato and a healthy pod population

Livestock
Scooter Blenny
Yellow Watchman with large Tiger Pistol (wasn’t so big when I got him)
Royal Grama

Large(ish) Emerald Crab - his cap is about 1.5” across
A small(ish) black crab & white that hitchhiked in on a coral – been in there for over a month and so far peaceful

I know the 50 Gallon is pretty much near the bottom end of the tank size for this type of fish so I wanted to get some opinions. The one I have my eye on is still pretty young an so on the small size – say around 2-2.5 inches

EDIT - not sure if it helps, but here's pic of the tank

Please note well that these are difficult fish, they may or may not eat at all in captivity so be SURE you see it eat. Also, they may or may not be reef safe, especially to LPS. And finally, they may or may not eat aiptasia.

Careful, they can take fish

I personally trust no crabs

Thanks for the feedback Steve.

I will definitely make sure to ask to see him eat. My LFS, in general, trains all their fish to eat/except mysis where appropriate, so hopefully that helps.

And yes, Ive read that they can be a sort of "luck of the draw" when it comes to whether or not they will go after aphasia and leave the LPS alone.

I curently have five fishes in a 300 gallon tank. They are Powder Blue, Yellow Tang, Sailfin Tang and two Chromis. This tank is 99 percent SPS frags. I have a colony and few frags of War coral that I will be getting rid of. I would love to to put in a Blue Face Angel. I will be checking one out tomorrow. Don't really know what other fish I would purchase in the future, but it would be revolved around the Blue Face. Will the other fishes be OK with the Blue Face? The tangs are 5-6 inches and the Blue Face is 5 inches.

I know the Blue Face are hit or miss with sps but I'm willing to try if its not a problem with the other fish.

Thanks

It is possible the large tangs will be upset, large tangs often resent additions. Try using an acclimation box.

1 or 2 banggia cardinal fish If two, must be a male plus female

1 or 2 royal gramma I am not sure you can do two in your sized tank

1 catalina goby requires a cool water tank, not suitable for normal aquaria

1 fire fish goby

2 rainbow goby I have never kept this fish, what is the real name?

blue stripe neon goby

bioload is fine, note comments above

120 Gallon Mixed Reef (48x24x24)

Flame Angelfish Not reef safe especially towards meaty LPS
Yellow Tang If this is the only tang, you will be ok, but add it last
Blue Hippo Tang Your tank is simply not large enough
Powder Blue Tang If this is the only tang, you will be ok, but add it last but your tank is not large enough for two tangs
Ocellaris Clownfish x2 (male+female)
Blue/Green Reef Chromis x3 will become only one, I would advise not combining with anthias
Carberryi Anthias x3 I would advise not combinining with chromis
Banggai Cardinal x2 (male+female)
Foxface Lo With the number of grazers already in the tank, this could be a problem
Diamond Watchman Goby or Yellowhead Jawfish?
Dragonface Pipefish x2 (male+female) (long down the road)
Green Mandarin (long down the road) In your sized tank I would not advise have pipefish and a mandarin as the all eat copepods

Maybes: well you already have a lot of fish, and the ones below would be too much; possible exception would be the Christmas Wrasse
Christmas Wrasse (found slim to none info)
Porcupine Puffer (mixed reviews)
Copperband Butterflyfish (mixed reviews)
Black Nox Angelfish (found slim to none info)

Your stocking list is excellent. Remember not to cycle with fish; use a piece of shrimp in a nylon or add some flake food.

7 month old 29G Cube mixed reef.

Ive been stocking tisbe pods in hopes of sustaining a red scooter (dragonet) Ive also read in to and purchased Nutramar Ova, LA swears by this stuff when it comes to feeding dragonets.

What are you thoughts, is it feasible?
Also looking to add a 20 to 30g sump in the fall.

Red scooters are a bit easier than mandarins but I am always reluctant to recommend any dragonet in a small tank because the odds are not in your favor. If you decide to do this anyway, you must feed multiple times per day and have a very peaceful non aggressive tank

Hi Steve I posted a list before but as many of us do, we change our mind. This is my wish list for a 90 gallon mix reef tank. Inverts consist of snails, crabs and blood red fire shrimp

I would like to know will I have any compatibility issues and would this be overstocking the tank.

1 Picasso Clownfish (Amphiprion percula)
1 Snowflake Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris)
1 Royal Gramma Basslet (Gramma loreto)
1 Tail Spot Blenny (Ecsenius stigmatura)
3 Vanderbuilt Chromis (Chromis vanderbuilti)
1 Ignitus Anthias (Pseudanthias ignitus)
1 Green Mandarin (Synchiropus splendidus) (after 6 months)

Thank you for your help
