Hello, I am back after deciding that I didn't want to go with a 40 breeder because of cost issues. My brother is upgrading his QT tank from the 12 gallon eclipse to a 46 so I thought that I would take it. He also thought that I would like his hermit crabs, which I would they are so fun to watch! I will get between 10 and 20 lbs of LR that is left over from my brother's aquascaping and about 2" of sand for the bottom. The filtration will be the stock filter(going to be FOWLR) with a shrimp or three with a CUC.

Here is what I was thinking for fish:
Purple Firefish(Nemateleotris decora)
Hi Fin Red Banded Goby(Stonogobiops nematodes)
White Banded Possum Wrasse(Wetmorella albofasciata)

Over stocked? Will they leave each other alone? Would I be able to keep a cleaner shrimp and pistol shrimp(for the goby) in the tank as well? Thanks in advance!!!!

Your stocking list is fine, but I would pass on the hermit crabs. The cleaner shrimp and snails will be better

Hi there,
Obviously I am new to this hobby and I have some questions about the fish that I am wanting to get. I just wanted an opinion to see if my wants are realistic for my level and for my tank size. I have a 34 gallon tank with about 30-40ish pounds of live rock, a protein skimmer, and I am planning on getting a sump in the next few months. I currently have a blood shrimp, cleaner shrimp, peppermint shrimp, some hermit crabs, 2 turbos and some other snails, and an urchin. The fish that I would like to have are...
2 Picasso clowns Once sexually mature, they will take over your tank
1 of either a melanurus wrasse/african mccoskeri flasher wrasse/ultra red fin flasher wrasse

Both require larger tanks

1 purple firefish goby Will be intimated by your clowns in this sized tank
1 tribal blenny
1 pink spot shrimp goby
1 purple back pseudochromis

Please let me know what you think. Thanks!!

blue spotted puffer in a reef. liveaquaria says with caution. Does this mean its as likely to nip as a flame angel or a coral beauty? I think I could live without the inverts to have the puffer. possible or just asking for trouble?

I have not kept this fish. I did research it for you and found that "the Blue Spot Puffer feeds largely on red algae, green algae, and coralline algae. Because of its penchant for coralline algae, the flesh of Stony Corals, and crustaceans, it is definitely not recommended for the reef aquarium. This is a fairly hardy species that requires vegetable matter as well as meaty foods including krill, clam, and carnivore preparations". And other vendor's recommended feeding is: "Offer it a varied diet of finely chopped carnivore preparations, squid, shrimp, chopped clams, marine fish, and herbivore preparations of marine algae." I would say, based on that, that it is "risky". In general, I am reluctant to recommend puffers for reef tanks, but this fish seems great for a FOWLR tank.

I'll begin my cycle shortly and am starting to plan out tank inhabitants. Looking for feedback and advice, specifically if there is any particular order they should be introduced.

2 Occ Clowns
Yashi Goby/Pistol Shrimp pair
Midas Blenny
Banggai Cardinal
Flasher Wrasse

Thanks!

Hey Steve,

In my 48x24x24 120 gallon tank would you suggest some smaller fish with nice color/personality that would work well with these tankmates:

2 perculas
vrolik wrasse
xmas wrasse
mccoskers wrasse
black cap basslet
yellow watchman goby
chevron tang
purple tang

Thanks

Hello Steve,
I have a 150 gallon, (48x30x24) 40 gallon sump, 2 250 watt MH, 2 vortechs, 1200 gph return pump

My current fish:
Yellow Tang
Pacific Blue Tang (size of a chromis, may get transferred to larger tank in time)
Royal Gamma
2 oscellaris clowns
3 chromis

I have a 1.5 inch 6 line wrasse and a 2 inch mystery wrasse in separate qts. I would like to add 1 to my 150 gal. (leaning towards mystery) and the other to another tank. I appreciate any input. thank you

I see no problem with fish, no especial order.

Both the six line and the mystery wrasse can be aggressive towards fish and the mystery wrasse also towards shrimp. The royal gramma would be the most likely fish to suffer that aggression. As you know a hepatus tang will outgrow your tank

Thank you for your input and quick response.
My hepatus tang will go into a new 300 gallon a friend set up recently and I've decided I won't add either wrasse to my main tank.

Thanks Steve. Could we also include a spotted cardinal?

The most important aspect of a tank for this fish is tank length rather than gallonage. Some of the larger tangs tend to swim a lot and tank length keeps them from "pacing".

Your clowns will be the limiting factor in the long run as they sexually mature.

ok I have an updated fish list along with the order I wish to add them.

I have a 90 gal that I hope keep some soft corals, muchrooms zoa etc... (easy stuff only :)

Lawnmower blenny x1

Royal Gramma x1
Peppermint Shrimp x1

Wheeler Shrimp Goby x2
Pistol Shrimp x2

Firefish x3
Fancy Brittle Star x1 (Still researching so I'm not sure)

Blue/Green Chromis x5

Ocellaris Clown x1

I was planning two weeks between each addition. What do you guys think?

Blue/Green Chromis x5
These will winnow themselves down until there is only one or two left

Ocellaris Clown x1

As with all fish additions we recommend quarantine

So would a single clown be preferable? I was under the impression that a pair was the norm....

A pair is what many people do. However a sexually mature pair of clownfish, will, at a minimum want to control 25-30 gallons of tank (some species require more) and are aggressive to other inhabitants, especially passive fish. Some people try to get around this problem by only having one clownfish

Hi everyone,

I have 20 years of fresh water upto 220G tanks and now have 75G high tech planted tank for 2 years. I am looking at red sea 130D 34G system and I want to know if this site has any fish and invert lists for this size tank.
