As long as you do not pair the clown, aggression will be less. Generally "red" based clowns such as GSM are more aggressive
Are clowns more aggressive when paired? Or is that mainly only with species that are aggressive in the first place?

I have a pair of Ocellaris as the only fish in the water column (also 2 scooters and a goby, but they're ground level). Would it be an issue to add additional fish?

Tank Info:[/b[
46gal 36"
50 lbs live rock
50 lbs live sand
AC110 fuge w/cheato
AquaC Remora skimmer

Water Stats:
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5-10 ppm (water changes performed at 10ppm)
Haven't tested advanced stats yet since I'm not keeping coral yet. I'm using Instant Ocean (non-reef) salt for now.

Current Fish:
2x Ocellaris
2x Red Scooter
1x Yasha

Current Inverts/CUC:
1x Pistol shrimp
2x Cleaner shrimp
2x Electric blue hermit
3x Astrea snail
2x Nassarius snail

Planned Additions - Immediate:
CUC as determined by John @ ReefCleaners
3-5 Blue/Green Chromis (Must be in groups?)
1-2 Pajama or Banggi cardinal (Must be solo or mated pair?)

Planned Additions - Soon
12-15 gal sump/fuge - limited by stand, which is divided in half. May purchase a custom stand instead.

Planned Additions - Future
1 Bubble Tip Anemone (way later!)
? corals

Clowns when properly paired mature sexually, and once bonded (the step prior to mating) become much more aggressive. Passive species of clowns then want to control 25-30 gallons of tank space, whereas aggressive species may try to control up to 50-60 gallons

Possibly but not necessarily and it depends on what fish.

Once sexually mature, the clowns may prove aggressive to all fish in their territory

Sometimes his size is a bit much

3-5 Blue/Green Chromis (Must be in groups?) Way too much for your sized tank and they will winnow down to one or two in any case
1-2 Pajama or Banggi cardinal (Must be solo or mated pair?)

Assuming you did not do the chromis, a mated pair of Banggai would be fine IF they are a M+F pair

lol, I've heard that. I asked for a light CUC since my tank is pretty new anyway.

Do they have a tendency to die off? Shame. I'm especially surprised since I keep reading that they're good, peaceful beginner fish.

They form dominance hierarchies where the weakest is killed. It is a shame. If you have a larger than (125 gallons upwards) some anthias provide what you are most likely seeking.

Hey,

I ran my list by you before and wanted to see what my next addition should be. I also was thinking of making a few additions to my list and wanted to run it by you.

In tank:
Onyx Clownfish x 2

List:
Dracula Goby x 2
Helfrichi Firefish x 2(pair)
Royal Gramma Basslet x 3
Green Mandarin
Yellow Eye Kole Tang
Yellow Tang
Achilles Tang

Possible additions to the list:
Flame angel
Kaudern Cardinal x 3

So like I was saying, what fish should I add next?

I also was talking to some people and they told me that I won't be able to keep 3 royal gramma's. I have a 180 gallon tank and have been told this is enough space to keep 3, but I am worried about them in QT killing one another because it is only a 40br. Can you clarify this for me?

Thanks
Dave

Hey everyone,

I would like to setup a 10 gallon tank, and am looking for some advice. I would like a tank with one or possibly two fish if they are small, and some interesting invertebrates. I have heard people recommend a smaller clownfish species, but clownfish seem boring to me. I am considering that option, but are there any other interesting/ active fish that are easy to feed and maintain that would be suitable for a 10 gallon? Also, what interesting invertebrates could I include? I wanted to have a mantis shrimp tank but I don't want to have a tank with just the mantis and snails.
Thanks for the help

hello, i have a 29 gallon bio cube, 30lbs of live rock, 30lbs of live sand. i have two clowns, some snails and 3 small hermits (which all have new snail shells, dirty bastards)..

planning on corals later down the road

id like to add a watchman goby and a pistol shrimp along with a cleaner shrimp. and also some nassarious snails to sift sand bed.

does this sound right. thank you for your input in advance

Sounds fine. I do not advocate hermit crabs because they kill snails.

A ten gallon tank is too small for a pair of clowns. Research a couple of very small fish like a firefish, and I will provide compatibility remarks.

Yellow Eye Kole Tang
Yellow Tang
Achilles Tang Advanced fish

Three tangs may be a problem in your sized tank as they are grazers

Possible additions to the list:
Flame angel
Kaudern Cardinal x 3 You only get two, a M+F pair

People have kept more than one gramma loretto but I have not so cannot comment from experience. One, however, is terrific. I would guess you have to introduce all at once.

Thanks
Dave

I currently have a clownfish, kole tang, bluespot jawfish and swissguard basslet. All these fish are very peaceful and do not bother eachother. My swissguard is the most skittish so I do not want to add fish that will stress him or chase him. I want to add a pair of anthias or fairy wrasses. Which would be more compatible with my swissguard? I would like two Twinspot Anthias (Bimaculatus anthias, male and female) or two wrasses (a Scott's and Longfin). Which pair of fish would be better for my tank?

I originally wanted anthias but thought they may be too active. Now I am reading wrasses don't get along well with basslets so am thinking I should consider the anthias again. They will be housing in a 65G aquarium with lots of live rock.

well I searched the forum and it seems the bimaculatus anthias grow large and would be too small for my tank. I also like the Ignitus Anthias and they appear to be peaceful and stay small. Would a pair of these get along well with my swissguard?

Anthias is preferred, but two anthias in your tank may be a bit much. Ignitus are excellent choices. Scott's fairy wrasse is extremely aggressive and is not recommended.

Looks like I will be upgrading tanks much sooner than expected... YAY! lol

current tank is a 55g and moving up to a 125g 72Lx24Dx18H

I will be moving what I have to the new tank: (except the hermits)

1- Blue Damsel (one eyed Willie)
1- B&W Clown
6- Astrea
6- Trocus
6- Bumble Bee's

My wife and I are trying to plan the eventual fish to go into the new tank, keeping in mind we want a reef tank and not just fish:

3-5 Blue Green Chromis
1- Japanese swallowtail
1- Catalina Goby
1- Royal Gramma
1- Psychedelic / Green Spotted Mandarin

Possibly in this order, probably in the next 4-6 months?

(my clown and damsel get along wonderfully!)

Thanks again!!

3-5 Blue Green Chromis Unfortunately chromis winnow down until there is only one or two left. You might alternatively consider anthias e.g. carberryi, resplendent, ignitus
1- Japanese swallowtail
1- Catalina Goby This is a cool water fish that will not do well at normal aquarium temperatures
1- Royal Gramma
1- Psychedelic / Green Spotted Mandarin With a mature tank (7 months) and lots of live rock , this should be fine

Possibly in this order, probably in the next 4-6 months?

Thanks again!!

OK lets try this again...

OK lets try this again...

After some suggestions from my last attempts and reading on, lets see if these posebilities fly...? All based on what I have been seeing at LFS's

Pair of Ocellaris Clowns
Diamond Gobby or an orange spotted gobby
Ignitis or Dispar Anthia
Firefish
Leopard Wrasse

Pretty good. The firefish should be established first.
