I forgot to ask if fir, skunk and peppermint shrimp are safe
I figured a much. Thanks for the help. I will pass on this guy.
My signature has no commercial aspects at all, and the mods have placed no restriction on my signature. In fact I do not use Apex on any of my tanks. However, I noticed your corals which should not be present in a tank of this maturity.Been reading a lot over the last month and here is my first post.
<img src="/images/welcome.gif" width="500" height="62"><br><b><i><big><big>To Reef Central</b></i></big></big>
I have done fresh water tanks before and my wife had a saltwater several years ago, so with our daughter getting to age where we can all appreciate the effort of a Reef Tank I have started the process.
I first want to thank the members here for convincing me the sales man at one LFS cared more about my money then the life of my fish when selling me a canister knowing I wanted to do a Reef Setup.
44g Corner Hex Tank
eshopps 100 Protien Skimmer
eshopps 100 Sump
Apex System with Temp, pH, ORP, Salinity (still need another temp)
R420R LED Light
Mag-5 Pump
And a Circulation Fan
Livestock: 2 Clowns (Nemo's), 1 Shrimp, 5 small hermit crabs, 5 snails.
Coral: 50+ pounds Live Rock, Fiji & a better kind, 1"-1.5" Live Sand in Tank, Fox Coral, Elegant Coral, Zoanths
Tank has been running 30 days, and it has been suggested to me that with the protein skimmer and as much live rock that I have my tank should not cycle or if it does it should be minimal.
Wish List: Blue Tang, Yellow Tang, Goby, an Small Angel looking fish ?, Bubble Tip Anem.. Only a dwarf angel and a goby out of this list will do well long term in this sized tank
Puffer would be nice but again my tank is too small. correct
I was told the fish that is Flow is a mean one so I haven't began to research that one.
Obviously you can seen the theme here, as my daughter knows all the names of the fish from Nemo. Unfortunately. But the pair of Amphiprion Ocellaris should make her happy.
My wife wants me to add a fish right now, and I have been doing my best to have her be patient. The local respected reef fish guy has suggested Yellow Tang next. If he suggested that, he is not knowledgeable at all
Very excited and happy to be here, I do wish the Mods would let you share your Apex Signature here.
However, I noticed your corals which should not be present in a tank of this maturity.
The LFS Reef guy is a bit old school but is very experienced, I did do research after the Elegant was in my tank that the ones coming available now do not live very long in tanks possibly from over fishing. It is not related in any way to over fishing. Your tank is not mature enough for corals including an elegance coral. If the elegance coral was from the IndoPacific, your odds of success are slim. However, this thread is only about Marine Fish Compatibility. Nothing good happens quickly in this hobby.
What fish would you suggest next ? As those who follow this thread know, I do not provide recommendations; however I am always happy to reanalyze any provided stocking list.
He had suggested not to go with Blue Tang as he said they can get Ick commonly and without having a quarantine tanks or hospital tank setup yet that it be very hard on my tank.
All fish should be quarantined (see my signature). it is true, however, that P. hepatus is highly susceptible to cryptocaryon irritans (ich) but so are other fish.
Dori (I hate using that) needs a tank that is 8 feet long and 240 gallons.
I am sorry to put you in the position to have to use Dori by that name.
The movie Finding Nemo as resulted in a lot of fish in appropriately sized tanks.
I have already read that but then have read that people have blue tangs in 50g tanks.
I cannot help what you read, only provide advice appropriate to long term success with your aquarium. A P. hepatus reaches fifteen inches and is a highly active fish that will do poorly in your sized tank.
Thanks why I am here!
My Clowns and Cleaners all came from the same tank at the LFS and I waited a month before adding the corals, after testing the water and getting 0 ammonia, 8 ph, 0 nitrites, 0 nitrates.
A month is not relevant. Be patient if you want to be successful in this hobby. Having good readings is necessary but not sufficient.
LFS do not quarantine but that is a whole separate discussion not appropriate to this thread. My blog has information about quarantining, ich, velvet, and other issues if you are inclined to read it. Or the Fish disease forum can provide a lot of "insight".
What about Black & White Humbug ? These damsels are a terror.
Are these pretty available when still young like the Clowns are ?
Or a Royal Gramma ? A royal gramma is a fine fish for your tank
Here is a list of what I have currently with my skimmer, HOB filter, no sump.
1 cleaner shrimp
2 ocsilaris clowns
2 damsels fish should not be used to cycle a tank; there are much better humane ways
1 fire fish
1 royal gramma
3 turbo snails
2 emerald crabs
There are a cuple more fish I want. (I will be getting rid of the 2 damsels to add more)
Want list:
1 Flame angel
1 yellow tang (small then I will trade out as they grow) please buy fish for the tank you have not expecting upgrades or rehoming
1 spotted mandarin for long term success, this fish needs a 75 gallon mature tank or a whole lot of very specialized treatment
That would be my hopes for fully stocked.
Also what order should I add them?
I understand they shouldn't be used to cycle but I got them before I knew that an they did just fine![]()
You haven't had a chance to comment on my fish list yet but I've noticed your aversion to owning a six line wrasse. Why? I've owned them in the past and they were model tank mates but I don't want to do something that puts my tank at risk or in chaos. I think they are one of the more beautiful reef safe wrasses but does it mesh well with my future list? I can always place him in the refugium as I have no plans for pod eaters aside frome the wrasse. Thank you for any information you can provide.
75 gal, 30 gal sump, 50lbs live rock, 50 dry rock, 40lbs sand, 300 gph return pump(that is what it is doing, actually rated at 700), 2 1300 gph pwrhds.
list
2 ocellaris
3 pajama cardinal
1 flame angel
1 yellow tang
1 longnose hawk excellent but not shrimp safe
1 lawnmower
1 Picasso trigger since the recommended tank size for this aggressive fish is at least 180 gallons, mixing it with two other fish that need space is a recipe for a bad result
1 fox face
some sort of dither fish
lfs said I could keep 1 ocellaris and 1 black ocellaris together? That is correct assuming they are both introduced as juveniles (not sexually differentiated)
had a trigger before with cardinal and tang and lawnmower with no problems, maybe just lucky?
