Hi, I have a 65 gallon (36x21x20) with 65 lbs live rock, 30 gallon sump, Reef Octopus DC1 skimmer, small fuge in the sump (it's a Precision Marine R30 sump), 60 lbs (about 1.5") of Reeflake substrate (3.5mm), two Kessil A360W lights, Eheim 1260 return pump (throttled back quite a bit), and two Vortech MP10ESw pumps. It's a new tank that's cycling and I'm just in the planning stages for fish. Plan to keep corals but not sure what kind yet. It does not have a cover and I prefer not to put one on it. So, no jumpers. It's a rimless tank. I had a fish only tank many, many years ago but consider myself new to this hobby. So looking for ease of maintenance and feeding.
Based on everything I've managed to read thus far it seems my choices are fairly limited. I was thinking...
Royal Gramma
Perc Clown (should I have two? what coral to get for it?) If you get two, you must get two very small juveniles; they will sexually differentiate and bond. With only one, it will eventually become female
Bicolor blenny
Flame angel not coral safe
Spotted cardinal (need more than one?) one is fine
I just can't figure out what else I could possibly add that meets my setup. That is if my list above is even acceptable.
Firefish I like but they jump. they do and frequently
Tangs but the tank is way to small for any of them that I know of. correct
Dragonets look cool but seem to be fairly high maintenance for feeding. If you wait a year, create "pod piles" and/or attach a refugium you should be fine
Should I have some kind of sand sifter? A goby? sand sifters do nothing of any true value; they make sand storms, which if you have corals can be a pain
I know this is about fish but I would also like...
Some sort of decorative shrimp, not sure which one works best.
No problem with the fish you are planning
The thought of a clam one day would be nice. a function of lighting
My wife is bent on having a brittle star but she may have to live with it in the fuge as I'm unsure if it would be OK in the DT. Not the little tiny ones, one of the red or green ones.
Anything else that you could suggest adding to this mix? I'd like a couple more fish. And of the list of fish that you approved, what order should I add them?
Going to have a 40 gallon breeder w/ a 20 long sump. Live rock, Skimmer, LED light, Coral. What fish? For sure I want a Clown....Open to anything else. Thank You
I have a 55 gallon tank that I want to possibly make a predator tank.
Fish I already own that would go into the tank first are:
1 - Snowflake Eel (Echidna nebulosa)
2 - Blue Damselfish (Chrysiptera cyanea)
1 - Purple Dottyback (Pseudochromis porphyreus) I have re-named this one psychochromis!
1 - Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris)
1 - Black & White Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris var.)
The blue and purple have been keeping each other in check it seems because there has been very little if any aggression. The eel is very small right now (6"-8"). I am thinking of adding a gbta for the clowns. In the future I may want to add:
1 - Dwarf/Zebra Lionfish (Dendrochirus zebra)
1 - Porcupine Puffer (Diodon holocanthus)
1 - Orangebanded Stingfish (Choridactylus multibarbus) or other type of Scorpion fish.
Will I have to remove the clownfish if I add the last three? Would they be safe if they are hosted by the anemone?
hi,
I have a 30g tank - over 2 yrs old, all params are fine. current inhabintants are
- fireball angel x 1
- blue/green chroms x 1
- firefish x 1
- red spot cardinal x 1 (i bought 2 but 1 died)
would it be feasible to add Not all, preferably not the blenny because of food competition with the angel
- green clown goby
- starry blenny
- a couple more red spots.
is the bioload ok? the cardinals are v small fish so shouldnt add much i think.
bioload should be fine. Red spot cardinal fish are fragile and ideally need multiple feedings per day. I feed nutramar ova as one feeding.
thanks for your help.

Not without exceptional effort since there would be insufficient copepodsI have a 34 gallon cube (Solana), I for sure want a pair of clowns, probably baby black and white Ocellaris,? But also want to add 1 or 2 more, not sure which ones and/or when to add them after the clowns.
orchid dottyback dottybacks are very aggressive, especially in small tanks, and even more especially with conspecifics
Bicolor dottyback
I really want a Mandarin, but only after 1 year at least, and I'm not sure I can put him in the 34?
I have a fairly new 120G SPS / LPS tank and it has only a Powder Brown Tang, a big Carberyi Anthias and a Naked Clownfish....I had a Misbar Ocellaris in there til yesterday when he decided to jump out onto the floor....nobody was home to save him, had he even been seen....
I want to add some color and was thinking about a Blue Reef Chromis, I don't want a school of them because I've always ended up with one huge chromis all alone...
What I wondered was whether a Blue Reef Chromis will get along with a Blue-Green Chromis? I would love one of each....
Tuxedo urchin
Pair of clowns (false percs)
Pair of black and white chromis
Prawn goby & pistol shrimp
Yellow and/or(?) green clown goby
This would work
