Oscellaris clowns
Why would a starfish die in the tank?
In a new small tank, they will starve to death. Even in large mature tanks, starfish are problematic in the long run.

Why would a starfish die in the tank?
Hi, I'm still in the planning stage and starting to buy equipment for my tank but I've been researching fish too and trying to figure out what I could keep. I've come up with a list of fish I fancy and I'd appreciate any advice/opinions!
The tank is 5', 120g and I want to go reef. I also want to stick to as peaceful fish as possible, don't want too many aggression issues. Also obviously I'll be adding these over a long time and cycling the tank fully first.
My ideas:
-Kole tang add last
-Chromis - can I have a group? at this point I am discouraging chromis being purchased due to the high incidence of uronema marinum
-flasher wrasse a male plus female is nice; be sure your tank is covered
-watanabei angel - 2 if I could get hold of them together but more likely 1 two of this species is difficult because males are a problem
-pair of clownfish - no idea which If you pick less aggressive ones such as A. percula or A. ocellaris or any genotype designer clowns, you would be better off
-one-spot foxface
-Cleaner wrasse they do not do well and have no effect on parasite eradication
-royal gramma
-copperband butterfly- I know the issues with this fish feeding etc- this would be if I had the tank established for a long time and was advanced enough to try it!
Please be nice if I've made any glaring errors!![]()
I am always nice and am simply here to make sure you are successful.
I wasn't accusing you of not being nice! :lolspin: I was just expecting that at least one of my suggestions was going to be ridiculous and I was expecting a bit of backlash from someone!
I have been doing this thread for about five years. You have no idea what I have seen in that time.
Thanks very much for your advice, I will go with the one angel and miss out the cleaner wrasse. I'm glad to hear I can have a pair of flasher wrasse, can you recommend any replacements for the Chromis? I don't really want to go with anthias due to the high feeding needs.
Hi Steve,
I have a 55 gal running for the past 3 months, 10 gal sump, Tunze skimmer, LED
Current inhabitants
Ocellaris Clown x 2
Starry Blenny x 1
Yellow Clown Goby x 1
McCoskers flasher wrasse x1
Yellow banded pygmy wrasse x1
Rainfordi goby x1
Orange spotted goby- bonded pair
PJ cardinal x2
Fire Shrimp x 2
Peppermint shrimp x 1
Red mithrax crab x 1
Astrea snails
Nassarius snails
hermit scarlet legged crab x 2
Bumblebee snails
Some softies and LPS corals
Planning to add more active colorful fishes to the tank- Reef safe and not aggressive to each other.
Plan to add
1) Pistol shrimp- Alpheus yaldwyni or randali
2) Royal gramma- I know you love them. Will it be too many fishes?
Thanks,
Vijay
Unfortunately, you really have a rather high population of fish for this sized tank and I would not add any additional fish.
I would like to get multiple blue/green chromis but I hear mixed messages on keeping more than one. I've seen posters say that they have 5. What are your general thoughts on this?
Thanks
Alright. I have a 36 gal bowfront tank. Tank is FOWLR and waiting on lighting and a skimmer to go full reef. Right now the occupants are as follows:
-2 clowns (b&w osc, snowflake osc)
-YWG
-Hi-Fin banded goby (think I'm going to set up my 10 gallon and get him out of there, have been having territory issues b/t him and the YWG. He was an impulse buy and the YWG wasn't happy about it)
-2 cleaner shrimp
-3 sexy shrimp (these guys have been hard to spot, is this normal?)
As previously stated, I want to get the Hi-Fin out of there because I never see either of my gobies now and I believe it's because there isn't enough room for the two of them at the bottom of the tank. This being said, I think I want one more swimmer and I'm going to call it a day as I don't want the tank to be crowded.
I'm thinking that I want a Macneill's Assessor. Something that is going to be pretty active, but not steal the show from my clowns who I've decided I want to be the stars of the tank.
Hi guys I'm kinda new and learning about this interesting hobby.
I've got a 55 gal tank with just corals in it. Been running for 2 months now. Water levels acceptable... Ammonia almost 0, nitrates and nitrates 0, salinity of 1.024 sp.g
I can see a bit of purple Cyanobacteria (is this normal during cycling?, will It go away eventually?) forming on the sand and also, something is forming on my glass which I have no idea, a pattern of clear lines, are these snail eggs? Help would be appreciated! Thanks!
Any advice about the sexy shrimp? Or are they just uncomfortable because there's no coral for them to play in?
75 gallon fowlr maybe coral w 75 pounds live sand and 75 pounds LR
2 ocellaris clowns
Yellow longhouse butterflyfish
Kole tang
Mystery wrasse mystery wrasse and mandarin are not compatible, especially in this sized tank
Yellow watchmen goby
Mandarin
Potters angelfish
Will this be the max a 75 gallon w/ sump could contain? Any suggestions on order of stocking?
