Hi Steve

I have a 28g with a 7g sump/refugium. I keep the latter on display also, as it's a nano bowfront. Currently have a juvenile oc clown and one pseudochromis as well as one tiny RBTA.

I would like a yellowhead jawfish and would like to get one more fish in the future. Not decided on anything yet, but perhaps a possum wrasse.
Are these guys compatible? I realize I don't have a ton of room to begin with.
There are numerous caves and hiding spots, so the pseudo seems to be very happy.

Thanks for the help!

The biggest issue is the pseudochromis; it will likely not allow a water column fish to be added. The jawfish should be fine.

Sounds good. Also, I'm comsidering a pair of neon blue gobies for my display refugium. Would this work, given that they are a mated pair? Or might they be ok even if not mated?

Thanks again!

They will only be ok if and only if they are a mated pair. However, I don't know where you would get that. Otherwise, only one per tank except in very large tanks.

Ok. So the clown, pseudo, and jawfish in main tank, and goby in the fuge. Does that about do it for my bioload? Or do you suppose I could manage another?

Thanks for the help and quick responses. Much appreciated!

Bioload, while important, is not your binding constraint. Pseudochromis can be very aggressive and kill fish. One goby is fine behaviorally, two will not work unless they are a mated pair.

Standard 20 gallon.

Current inhabitants:
(1) A. occelaris
(1) Banded coral shrimp (i know they can attack fish, thus far the clown keeps it's distance and has never had any signs of damage, it may find a new home if i don't upgrade tanks soon.)
(1) astrea snail
(1) trochus snail
(1) turbo snail
(2) nassarius snails
(2-3) dwarf hermits, haven't seen the third one in a while

Corals will mostly be lps, may possibly add sps in the future.

Intended purchases:

(1) white banded possum wrasse (red with white stripes, similar to or same species but unnamed tanaka pygmy wrasse)
(1-2) purple firefish/dartfish (with screen top) I haven't been able to find any information on how to establish a mated pair of dartfish, or if they become more aggressive when in pairs.
(1) Blue and gold blenny
(1) Yellow striped cardinal
(1) wheeler's goby (could there be aggression between the blenny and wheeler's?)

If the banded coral shrimp seems like it might be a danger to any of the fish, it may get re-homed and replaced with a scarlet cleaner and several ornamental shrimp like peppermint and sexy anemone shrimp.

Your plan has six fish which is way too many for this sized tank. A clownfish, once sexually mature, will, by itself try to protect about 25 gallons of tank space

I am planning to upgrade aquariums within the year, which is why my stocking list was more ambitious than it should be. Are there any fish on that list which could be added prior to upgrading, that would be sustainable with the 1 clown, long term, if for reason i am not able to complete the upgrade?

None of these fish is rare or hard to get. I suggest you wait until you have the upgrade to stock it. Especially since you have a very small tank.

Hi everyone. After setting up and cycling my tank last year, I found out that the location I had set my tank up was not a good place. It simply got too hot. Thankfully I found out while the tank had finished cycling but before I even stocked a CUC!!

I've since moved the tank, and also added a chiller. My tank is currently cycling and I'm taking this time to learn more about possible tank inhabitants.

Tank is a 28 gallon JBJ Nano Cube with protein skimmer, with about 1.5" sand bed and about 25-28 pounds of live rock. The rock is built up fairly high and so there is still a fairly generous area of open swimming space and open sand bed.

I plan on only running FOWLR for the next long while, but possibly adding some soft corals a year down the road.

I realize I have picked out far too many fish for my tank, however, these are all fish I like and was hoping others here might give me some opinions on which combination of these fish listed would work best together. I'm also open to other suggestions, but I want bright and bold colors!!

Yellow Clown Goby

Pink Streaked Wrasse

Captive Bred Ocellaris (I think they might get too big for my setup, but I wanted to confirm)

Firefish (regardless of any other fish in my tank, I must have a Firefish. My tank does have a full cover to prevent jumping out)

Royal Gramma Basslet

Orange Prawn Striped Goby

And lastly. While I've read that I cannot keep more than a pair of Skunk Cleaners, I haven't been able to find any information as to whether I could keep more than 2 shrimps of different types. For example, could I keep a skunk cleaner, a fire shrimp, and sexy shrimp etc.

Yellow Clown Goby

Pink Streaked Wrasse excellent fish

Captive Bred Ocellaris (I think they might get too big for my setup, but I wanted to confirm) size is not the issue; once they are sexually mature they are mildly aggressive within their perceived territory. However if you have a pair, once bonded and mating, they are fairly aggressive given your tank size

Firefish (regardless of any other fish in my tank, I must have a Firefish. My tank does have a full cover to prevent jumping out)

Royal Gramma Basslet

Orange Prawn Striped Goby

stocking list is fine

skunk cleaner pair and fire shrimp is fine

A couple of question/ changes.
Original list
Firefish - Nemateleotris magnifica
Green Clown Goby - Gobiodon atrangulatus
Combtooth Blenny - Scartella cristata
Pajama Cardinal - Sphaeramia nematoptera multiple
Nemo - Amphiprion ocellaris Two, male plus female
Bartletts Anthias - Pseudanthias bartlettorum multiple
Carpenters Wrasse - Paracheilinus carpenter male plus multiple females
Foxface - Siganus vulpinus
After reading close to 800 pages (so far) of this thread I noticed your dislike?? for the Bartletts Anthias My issue with this species is that females tend to all become male over time; as a single, no issue but for multiples, Dispars would be better. I do favor resplendent or carberry but they do require multiple feedings per day and was wondering if I would be better off getting Dispars - Pseudanthias dispar - instead. The online store I am dealing with, in Canada, can not get resplendent or carberryi. Also would I be able to add a Alpheus randalli and Amblyeleotris randalli to my stocking list? Yes, no problem.
The lone firefish looks tiny by itself in the dt. Have the clown goby going through tt in quarantine now, no chances!!
Thanks for all that you do here and with your blogs they are very informative, and your patience after reading so many posts is amazing!
You have read all of this thread? Wow!

A friend is shutting down his tank and has a pink streaked wrasse, reading conflicting views about this fish. He has had him for two years and he is about 2" long, would he cause problems especially being added this early?

My experience with a pink streaked wrasse is that they are very peaceful.

Can I add a blue spot jawfish?

Can I add a blue spot jawfish?

Mature 100g tank with
4 blue green chromis
2 ocellaris clowns
1 royal gramma
1 azure damsel
1 bicolor angel
1 diamond watchman goby
1 valentini puffer
1 Rollands damsel

Can I add a bluespot jawfish?

Mature 100g tank with
4 blue green chromis likely to become one over time
2 ocellaris clowns
1 royal gramma
1 azure damsel
1 bicolor angel
1 diamond watchman goby
1 valentini puffer
1 Rollands damsel

Can I add a bluespot jawfish?

Blue spotted jawfish are collected in the Sea of Cortez and do best with cooler temperatures (72-73F)

Quick question - a single Firefish plus multiple Dartfish are OK together in a larger (100g+) tank?

I was thinking of adding one (Firefish) with a few Zebra Bared Dartfish.

Thanks in advance!

your list is on the heavy side . . .

Wish List:
Ocellaris Clownfish 2x - Current
Scissortail Dartfish 2x
Purple Firefish
Zebra Barred Dartfish
Chalk Bass I have concern with compatibility with the one below as well as the royal gramma; normally multiple species of basslet is not a good idea
Pinstriped Basslet I have concern with compatibility with the one below as well as the chalk bass; normally multiple species of basslet is not a good idea
Royal Gramma 2x for two, I would be happy if the tank were longer plus and there may be issues with two other species of basslet
Blue Head Chromis - Current two chromis is likely to become only one ovr time as they occupy the same ecological niche
Scopas Tang - Current
Blackbar Chromis two chromis is likely to become only one ovr time as they occupy the same ecological niche
Lawnmower Blenny
Pink Spotted Watchman Goby

CUC
All snails

Thanks

Depending on whether there are other fish to intimidate the firefish, it should be fine.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I have not finished stocking the tank (120), but I believe the rough plan will be -
X3 Chalk Bass (already in there)
X3 Zebra Barred Dartfish
X1 Firefish (not sure, likely Purple)
X2 Clowns
X1 Chromis
X1 Kole Eyed Tang
X1 Neon Goby
X1 Starry Blenny

On paper, this seems like a pretty mellow tank, right?
