I was unaware of the Chromis issue, but after reading your response I do see a lot of other threads about it too. Maybe I'll limit myself to just one after a healthy time in QT.

I guess I should eliminate the hermits eventually too. I thought all the empty shells I gave them might keep them happy enough. Would a Flame Hawkfish fit into the mix if I got rid of the crabs?

Flame Hawkfish are not shrimp safe but cannot capture/eat hermit crabs.

Hi Steve!

Tank: 50 gallon display, 25 gallons in a 35 gallon sump. It's established with lots of rock and a lot of hiding places.

Fish: fireball angel, royal gramma, sixline wrasse, ocellaris clown, and flame hawk.
inverts: emerald crab, turbo snail, and a few soft corals.

addition: firefish or orange stripe prawn goby (Amblyeleotris randalli)? But just one. Would either of them be okay?

Also: I lost a skunk cleaner shrimp. What are the odds it was the flame hawkfish and not the crab?

Okay back to the drawing board--I can't find a randalls goby.

How about any combination of these to add to the above. I don't know how many to add:

bangaii cardinal
randalls goby
neon goby
midas blenny

I probably cannot add all to the five I already have in a fifty gallon.

How many can I keep in a fifty?

I am looking to add the kole tang and tomini tang -probably one or the other. I already have the other fish mentioned.

First post here - woooo!

I've set up a 20G tank for a Peacock Mantis Shrimp. I don't have anything in the tank besides sand, about 16-18lbs of live rock, a heater that I probably won't need until October and a Fluval C3 as the filter.

It's been sitting, today is the 6th day. I figure it's about time to test the water quality, right? What test strips do I need to cover all the bases and how will I know when the tank is ready? I'll probably grab them today so I can test it for end of week 1.

Also, what should I be thinking about lighting wise? I've read that too much light will not be good for the shrimp. Will this preclude me from purchasing anemones in the future or are there some that would be compatible with the light requirements of the Mantis Shrimp?

P.S. Got live rock from holding tank at LFS, I know VERY little about marine aquariums, so excuse my idiocy, but I assume they're cultured, as there already worms popping out the a couple of the rocks and doing their thing. I assume that's positive sign and not a negative one.

My tank is: 75 gallons, 65lbs lr, 100lbs sand with a bunch of assorted snails, a sea hare, bubble tip anemone, 3 emerald crabs, 3 blue legged hermits, Clark's clownfish, with 2 spotted cardinals. I have a tuxedo urchin coming in next week. I still plan to get 2 green chromis and a firefish as well.

The yellow tang will not be happy and normally it should be the last fish added. There will be aggression, but it is difficult to predict how bad it will be.

This thread is about marine fish compatibility so your questions are not really on topic. I happen to love mantis shrimp but I would not suggest adding an anemone with it, especially in a small tank. The normal tests would be nitrate, nitrite, but I would not suggest test strips.

Both hawkfish are ambush predators. Small fish may be at risk from either.

Right, but is the risk negated if they are the smallest fish in the tank? And are they likely to attack one another?

They will coexist. The firefish may be at risk, however. Any cleaner shrimp, etc. will be eventually consumed.

I am concerned about the sixline as well but after a year in my tank, he shows no aggression whatsoever. (At least not while I'm around.)

hi members, hope im in the right thread. i am setting up a 135gal tank, i want the reef, a black lion, and a few colorfull fish, what are compatable? i have done lots of home work on web sites and they all have different stories.. any one with a sucsessfull tank?

1 Kaudern’s Cardinal
1 Sixline Wrasse
1 Mandarin Dragonet (with pod spotfeeding)
1 Shrimp/Goby pair (not sure what kind yet)
1 Tiger Watchman Goby (would this be okay with the shrimp/goby pair?)
1 Dwarf Angel (not sure if Coral Beauty, Flame, or Cherub. Any preference?)

My biggest concern is the sixline wrasse (I find them very interesting, but im worried about their aggression). Not positive if the cardinal would get picked on too much by a sixline.


Another question I have is will the clownfish pair be a problem with any of the other fish on my list once they are mature (i know that they become quite territorial then).

Would I be able to add anything else after this (I know bioloads differ alot, but I just wanted your opinion).

List #2, just picked up an awesome deal on a full 90g set up. Gonna be a while before I get anything in, but I now have more water to play with from my initial list from the 40 breeder.

So, tank is 90g, sump is 30g with refugium and running a BM100 skimmer. Tank will have a clear netting 1/4" screen over the tank.

Stocking list:
1 - Royal Gamma Basslet
1 - Firefish (either red/white or purple/gold)
2 - Ocellaris Clownfish (tank bred, small, added same time)
1 - Court Jester Goby OR 1 - Green clown goby (depends on what I can find locally)
1 - Sailfin Blenny
1 - Kaudern's (Benggai) Cardinal (Would 3 be ok, or better with one?)
1 - Mandarin (9 months after cycling, also plan on trying to train it to eat mysis/other prepared foods while in QT)

Maybe list
1 - Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse
1 - Chalk Bass
