Please show pics of your 180 tanks

Yea. That's where I get my rock from. Right now I have about 70 pounds of TBS, 100 of base, and I'm going to get more of TBS. During my newbie days, I had a bad cycle which really killed alot of my TBS. I hope to get some nice pieces as finishing pieces.

Thanks for + comments April!

Jay, looking good. Don't put too much rock. IMO looks better and better frow if approx 50% rock!

jay24k Looks really good! Sorry to hear you had such a bad cycle with your TBS, It's really beautiful LR. But show us when you put in the new rock! I love to see all the aquascaping,I am pretty bad with it myself.

jarhed I think you got a great deal on the 60 gal sump! You should be proud of yourself, It really is looking great! But in your site you mentioned that you have not used any nails? How are you holding everything together? Did you use screws instead?

If they could only get some diving time, I'd be down there. I don't want too much rock but I think there is a few spaces I need to fill. I have a design in mind and only the two outside pieces will be higher up to cover the overflow. Other then that, I like a more open tank.

Me too! Mine is too even all the way across, But I have too many pieces that stand up and you cant stack them. I cant make myself get in there and redo it right now, and the little guy at my LFS still hasnt made it out here to help me with it! Be careful with the TBS in the main tank, you dont want a sudden recycle with all you have in there now, plus all the hitch hikers tht you get with it, They are great in a tank you can sort out the good from the bad.

Have done this on my own for so long, it's like getting old and trying to stay in style or hip. What I'm trying to say is, I'm not up on all the lingo these days. What is TBS?

Used construction screws. All 3" screws on the wood and 1" screws on things like braces. No screw is supporting any weight except for the top plates, which I will be reinforcing with hangers over the rafters in the attic this weekend. Other than that, the stand, and the rest of the wall is all supported by itself.

If you look at normal stud wall construction, none of the nails actually support weight. They all just bind the 2x4's together and keep them from shifting from under the weight that the WOOD itself holds.

Just so happens that I couldnt drive a nail in straight if my life counted on it, so it was easier for me and much more accurate to use construction screws and a $20 power driver from Harbor Freight Tools.

I use an ASM G3 and it is working great. My bioload currently is small. 2 Clowns, Royal Gramma, Mandarin, and a yellow tang. However it really pulls out some nasty stuff when it's there.

As far as the TBS, I will remove most stuff that I've seen that dies overtime. Since I will be adding only about 30 pounds at a time, I think a good clean up crew should be able to handle it. Also, Since I have 170 pounds now of rock, I would think the bacteria should be able to handle it. Water changes will also be done.

This summer, I think after our vacation, I am going to do the TBS in the smaller tank, just to enjoy all the crazy things that are in and on the TBS, It is truly amazing. For months on end there are new hitchhikers that appear out of no where.. I cant wait!

jay24k I am on the waiting list for the Gd. it is not going to fit in my sump, due to the footprint. I think I may just get a seperate container for the G3, run an overflow to it . My tank is not reef redy, and the overflow on the tank has only 1 drain on it, so I dont know if I should get the bigger one with 2 and run them to each sump or just get another overflow for the G3. Any suggestions?

jarhed, well howerver you are putting this together it looks great, and I cant wait to see it all set up, Are you going withTBS in this tank?

If you have time,Patscan has a great thread going on" Our TBS" they show you part 1 and part 2 shipments and all of the little creaturs they have found and still finding on the TBS, the thread has split 4 times I think, its quite lengthy but great reading and great pics all the way. And they are super people in there for questions. I think you will like it! It takes me forever to get caught up on the thread, and then it splits gain..LOL TBS may not be for everyone, but if you are thinking about it,it is great reading to help you decide You get alot of unwanted critters, but you find them and pull those out, If you dont know if what you find is a good one or not, they can tell you. It's just great stuff and great reading.

No TBS for me April. I found HiRocks which is very close to me. It's dry base rock. I've bought 120 pounds so far and have about 60lbs of live rock in my 40-gallon that will be transferred over. I figure one more order of 60lbs of base rock, then about 40 more pounds of live that I can get locally should get the big tank started just fine.

No need for thanks at all Joe, they truly are beautiful tanks, It is great to see nature in its glory, I look at mine every day and am greatful to see such beauty unfold, so many things to look at, and they change so frequently. Very tranquil dont you think?

What skimmer do you use on your set up? do you run both tanks seperatly?

jarhed, do you know what you are going to do with this one? FO ,FOWL,Reef,or a little of everything?

Oh, this will definitely be reef! Anything less would be a huge waste of glass and water! :D

Can you go with a bigger tank for your sump for your G3? I wouldn't add a second overflow going to a seperate tank. You won't have anything to regulate the water in each tank. You could add an overflow to your sump to another tank but then you have 2 point of failures. It would work fine but little risky. I would go with a bigger sump or an external skimmer. Or drill your tank and do it that way.

April,

tranquel ... yes !!!! no skimmer at this time.. the tanks are running independantly at this time.. i am going to hook up another 180 to the setup and connect them all together with a single 75 gallon sump , 58 gallon grow-out tank and a 58 gallon fuge hidden in the stand.. at that point i have a mtc skimmer to skim the 3 tanks...

Joe
