Possible to do too much light?

I'm looking at upgrading my PC lighting on my BC29, and was looking at the JBJ K2 Viper. There's a 150W and 250W. Wasn't sure which way to go. I'm also looking at LED as an option, any thoughts on that?

I have a BC29 with leds and I am very happy with it and I like the no added heat get ahold of bill he will hook u up

+1

better to go LED, you go MH on that tank you then have to consider a chiller for safety so then at that cost total do the better option off the bat.

In answer to your too much light question; yes you can get too much light for some corals. Go LED as well

I have a 250W pendant over my 24G Nano and don't have heating issues...just need to raise the height a little in the summer time. And I don't think you can really ever have too much light, just need to acclimate things accordingly.

Have you considered T5? I have the Nova Extreme Pro 20" 6x18w T5HO over my 24g Nanocube and my LPS and Zoas seem to love it. It adds no extra heat either.

What height do you currently have your 250W pendant at?

I just ordered led tube retrofits that are brighter than t5's. I will recommend going LEDs but that's just cause of my research, no first hand experience on leds till they arrive.

I'm not sold on LEDs yet, with the color and growth I'm getting now with T5s it will take more than savings over a period of time to make me switch. Of course that was what I said about T5's a few years ago. But after seeing many have great success with T5s, I switched, now I'm waiting to see the Acro LED success that could make me switch.

The hard part is now finding bulbs for that fixture. I have a 2x18w t5ho for my refugium and alot of places are listing the bulbs as discontinued.

a 48" LED + 2x T5 fixture.

Thanks! Im really happy with growth and color. At first I was a little skeptical with spending the money because there was alot of nay sayers saying that leds won't grow sps and you wont get good colors. Most of the sps started out as browned out frags. So all of the growth and color have been cause from the sps (besides keeping stable and acceptable params).

He gave me inspiration for my setup.

Nanotuners has the UVL bulbs in 18" now. That petplace has tons of them, they changed the name of the bulb though, that is why many places show them as discontinued.

IMO a lot has to do with your setup... As some have stated, those with enclosed hoods will almost assuredly need a chiller... If you have a hanging pendant, you may be able to get away without using a chiller... There is such a thing as too much light, even with giving your corals time to acclimate to the greater intensity... Another thing to account for is the fact that some fish and non-coral invertebrates do not like intense light and will remain hidden... I loathe PC's... I think you'll be happy with any route you choose to go over them, whether it be LED's, MH's or T5's...

I just emailed Bill this morning about setting my BC29 up with Led's and getting rid of the 3 x36 pc I have in there now.
