Purple crispa

It's Aquatic Collections in Hayward.
The other store's name is Aquarium Concepts in Dublin - not the greatest store, but not terrible either. They had a bunch of nice, large haddoni and other interesting stuff in the past. It's also the only store I know around here that has actual live rock in stock.

FWIW, my first impression of the first "mag" pics posted by ThRoewer, especially the second one, was that they looked like purple footed BTAs.

The pics posted by
Sedgro look very BTAish to me as well. Hard to tell without seeing them in person though. It wouldn't be the first time that purple based BTAs were mis-IDed as mags.

Man not trying to doubt you ThRower, but those anemones with their tentacle shape and orientation on that rock look mighty suspect. I have seen large quadricolors with tentacle counts similar to those.

They also had a large wild collected rose BTA (as large as the crispa!) and it looked very different from the little magnificas.

Every single BTA I've seen so far had a rather speckled/streaked color structure appearance of their tentacles while every single magifica I've seen had solid color structures.

BTW, I'm quite sure the little ones were close in coloring to this mag, maybe a bit more to the green - hard to tell under actinic lights.

Here are a couple more pictures. I'll rescind by BTA identification to I don't know. Something different...

I have 1 in my tank. Its stayed where I put it, middle of the tank with moderate flow. Its still sulking and my Percula has shown no interest so far. It is a little small for the Percula maybe. The fish is 2.5", the anemone right now is probably only slightly bigger.

@Sedgro why don't you take a picture of the mouth since you have access to it right now. Mine is wedged in the rockwork and I can't see the mouth. Heck, I can't even find it when I fan the tentacles around.

Two pictures in post #45 does not look like BTA to me. Could be Magnifica. I agree with Winwood that it look like a Malu. However, I never see a Malu with that color column before.

They are mags, definitely no malu or BTA

BTW: They also have a few of this kind, just in case someone is crazy enough to put these into their tank...

I'll explain my thought process of why I'm not certain they are mags. First the bulging out in the middle of the tentacle is not very mag like at all. Mags under stress usually retract in the middle of the tentacle, but still may have a bulb at the tip. Second, when you handle a mag they never, or almost never, have a small foot like the one showed. The foot will stay large and curl in on itself in order to protect itself, but doesn't shrink to a taper like the one shown. This large wide base of a foot gives mags their iconic pillar like shaped column. Third the fact that none are draped off that rock or basket, and seem to be looking to hide their foot is another indicator. Even sick mags will drape off surfaces, but never have I had one try and conceal its foot. They might hide from light, but don't seem to have the natural response to bury their foot like the ones shown. Also the upside down shot is exactly the shape handled malus tend to have when disturbed.

For some reason, they don't look like mags to me either, but I'm not doubting you Thomas. If I wasn't heading out of town, I'd go check them out. :p

Something else I just noticed, if you look really closely at Sedgro's 3rd pic on the right side, there appears to be a ringed tentacle. Also others have what appear to be lesser rings on them as well. To me this points to malu and not magnifica.

The one thing I would bet serious money on is that those were not malu - not by any stretch of imagination. I've seen plenty of malu and have a few in my tank. You may confuse them with a small crispa, but by no means with a magnifica.

Did you notice the ringed tentacle in the picture? IME, that is neither a crispa nor magnifica trait. Also, I've never seen a crispa with a brightly colored column, a tan or grey column is one of the identifying characteristics of the species.
