Purple crispa

This morning it was close to a blob with it's mouth wide open - when I get home I will likely have to siphon it out and also do a significant water change.

I feel the reef anemones are quite sensitive. I rather stick to mud dwellers of the tidal zone that can handle living in a swamp for a while.

Just flushed it and have now two very upset percula. I guess I will have to get them a replacement as soon as it is safe - this time it will be a gig.

I got a crispa anemone about 3 weeks ago. It came in almost pale white, even though it looks attractive to the eyes, it is actually not a good sign. I stacked some rock work up so that the anemone has a "shield" from the powerheads within the tank.

The anemone did not attach after 3 days and I had to create a small crater and put the anemone in so that he was protected from all sides. He did attach after a few days and has not moved since.

The anemone's tentacles were also very small and I was afraid I was going to lose it. Then after 2 weeks of it being in the tank, the tentacles swelled up and it has started to get a brownish color and this is, from what I understand, is what you want.

Also, the anemone was a slow eater. I took a small turkey baster and sprayed some mysis shrimp near its mouth every 3 days. It did not eat the shrimp immediately but by the next morning, all the shrimp was gone. I am hoping that the fish/shrimp did not eat it.

This has been what was successful for me and I have never had one of these anemones before. The anemone will swell up in the afternoon when the lights are on and it will shrink down when the lights turn off. Seems like I am having decent luck. Hope this helps you.

Well, AC had 2 nice purple crispas in again so I decided to give it another shot - this time with proper quarantine.

All the new giganteas they got in looked like they would for sure need treatment so I decided to pass on them.

One gigs was green, the other two either blue or purple-blue.
No mags at AC, but Neptune and Cal. Reef each had one.

The crispas are also not really solid purple, but rather have just a lot purple on the tips.

Here a picture of it in the QT:

Looks pretty good and no deflating or rat pellets so far.

It's now about 3 weeks since I cleaned the 42 gallon tank and took all sick anemones out. Will it be safe to add this one to that tank in about a week assuming it doesn't need treatment, or is the pathogen still in the tank?

IMO, 3 weeks is plenty of time for the bacterial population go back to base line. The competition in the microbial word is very fierce. For most of the bacterial, the doubling time is in term of a few hrs or less

When I came home this evening it looked like this and the water was slightly cloudy:

... compared to this yesterday:

Sunday afternoon it expelled some zoox, but it didn't deflate or contract.
This morning it still looked OK.

For now I added a skimmer and tonight I will do a water change...

... should I also start treatment with Cipro?

It looks like a bacterial bloom of some sort in QT. I would not personally treat it based on the photos. If anything, I recommend checking ammonia daily due to cloudy water.

I've seen this cloudiness with sick anemones.
Plus, from what I've seen so far crispas react differently when sick that giganteas - it's much less obvious and slower progressing.

OK, the skimmer cleared the water and the anemone perked a little bit up, so I will wait and see how it looks tomorrow before making a decision on the treatment.

The cloudiness most likely result from discharge from the anemone.
He looks nice.
In my set up, if there is anything abnormal in the water + 100% water change. I just draw water from DT and replaced premixed salt water to the DT.

He looks great. Best of luck. I wish I can get a purple Crispa. I think I will clear a space for one and start on the hunt for one when I have the room.

This is how it looked tonight:

I guess the skimmer did the trick.

The percula like it, but it seems they are loosing some of their black.
