question about powerheads

I have a 40 gallon hex tank. I have a 10 gal sump/ref. I have a reef cbr backpak. Anyway

I have had filters on my two 402 powerheads. They really get full of gross debries fast. Should just remove the filters altogether. (seems like that is alot of stuff decaying in the water.)

I also have two of these powerheads and it makes allot of current.
Do I need both?
They are really blowing my xena arround allot no matter where i move them.

Are these filters you're talking about sponge filters that just fit on the intake end of the powerhead?
In MY OPINON, those things just end up being an eyesore - and I'd THINK would become Nitrite/Nitrate/Ammonia warehouses and factories.
When your system is doing A++, your refugium and live rock should be able to handle most of your tank's filtering needs

Yes that is what they are.
I took them off. Wow what a difference in the movement in water.

Do you think that these two powerheads are to much for my tank?

How do I know if it is to much flow or not?

These pump about 270 gph that is 540 gph tank size is 40 so that would be 13.5 turn arround. I think That is good. I also Have a cpr bak-pak and my line from my sump so they are going to add some. You want at least 10x for turn arround rate right?

I don't know what people say for turn around rate, but basically if you have some corals getting beat up they probably are in to high flow of area. If you have a lot of algae you probably need more flow, or to lower your phosphates. I think it's more of knowing where to place your coral then it is specific amounts of flow.

Well said. Regardless of how much flow is in the tank, the placement of the coral will be relative to it's flow requirements, which should be learned beforehand.

Xenia like to be placed outside of a direct flow path, but close enough so they can reach over into it as they please.

Xenia are so cool. They just kind of moved out of the flow. Now they are very happy and have grown about 1/2 in the last week. How big can they get?
