rare clowns ?

There was a cinnamon that came into an LFS here that had some awesome colors. One that I have never seen on a Melonopus. Bright yellow/black body with yellow belly to match the tail. It had the deep blue stripe and black pectorals. I mean it was yellow tang type yellow. It came in as an Australian Black Melonopus. I know they are commonly called red and black, cinnamon, fire clownfish but they are normally red or deep orange aren't they? If it was a pair I would have picked them up but they just wanted too much for it.
Can't wait to see what the ones from Vanuatu look like.

Yeah , I heard about that variation also...difficult to come by...
Mine dont have the yellow,just the blue stripe,and black feet like the nigripes...and the red is flame red like a fire clown...

If you got a steal that is all the more reason to brag about how much you paid. Obviously you think if someone knows you didn't pay a fortune they are going to e-diminish the quality of your fish, which is irrational, possibly even paranoid. If there is a consensus here that fish have to be expensive to be appreciated, and you actually have the need for your fish to be appreciated on a forum, than maybe you should just lie about how much you paid. Or don't post. Either way, there is no reason to get aggravated with posters because you are disgruntled about how prices reflect rarity.

Which brings to light an interesting question. How, if these fish are as rare as you say they are, and I do not doubt that, could someone collect and sell the fish for a cheap enough price that a fish store isn't going to realize they are buying a rare fish. If the fish is actually rare, the people collecting it may not have known what it was. But if that was the case, I think they would have looked it up. Who is going to sell an unknown specimen for bottom dollar? What I'm getting at is for you to have gotten a fish far below what it should have cost, everyone who had the fish before you must have thought it was something other than what it is. Not just your LFS was careless, but the collectors, exporters, importers, and your LFS. That is a lot of mistakes to be made, but it's possible. Price does typically reflect availability and rarity, but not necessarily in every case. So you shouldn't get offended when people use price to gauge rarity, because when it comes to ornamental fish, one is typically synonymous with the other. Do not take this wrong as me saying I don't believe you, it's actually quite contrary as I don't have any reason to not believe you.

Ive seen people on these boards say they paid 19.99 for a carpet anemone at petco or something...SO IT DOES HAPPEN !!!
I saw a PAIR of nigripes clowns at some stinky store in south jersey a few years back...
25 for the PAIR !

Exactly, it does happen. All I was pointing out was that price/rarity ratio is not necessarily an obscure way of looking at things. Although, as with your case, everyone has to be willing to allow for exceptions because the price versus rarity thing does not hold up in certain circumstances.

Clownfish are not expensive unless their is a market for them and/or someone creates a market by jacking up the price.

With the exception of Latz, Leuc, and gasters, maybe a couple others, clowns don't wholesale for much more than $16-$20, that includes nigripes, allardi, akindynos, chrysopterus, etc.

Melanopus clowns, regardless of how nice they are, are still just melanopus. They are priced accordingly until someone jacks up the price on a website. When it gets back to the collectors/exporters, they jack up their prices.

I would appreciate a LFS that simply doubles the wholesale price they paid rather than trying to figure out how much they could overcharge for a nice pair. I wouldn't call them stupid on a public forum.

I also have to agree with the others, if you don't have pictures this thread is worthless.
