rare clowns ?

One of my favorite clownfish. They come in even nicer and more vibrant looking. This particular variant actually does cost a LOT when compared to other clowns at some wholesalers. Non-mated pairs went for well over a 100 dollars wholesale for this particular variant earlier this year. Pictures don't do them justice, you have to see them in person to appreciate the vibrance in their coloration.

I should also go on to say that this particular variant of melanopus clowns is relatively rare in the hobby. They trickle in every once in a while. Usually, the normal darker more drab coloration is commonly available.

A high end LFS out here had a few large ones years ago, although, they said they were from New Caledonia. The red/orange and blue stripes were literally glowing, very nice.

We have also had these just onec in bangkok from vanuatu and yes they even more stunning in person. they stay a nice size too.

Have seen these at the importer here, very nice clowns in person. Only slightly higher in price...

You have a nice clown there

actually, criccio... the red/orange, blue stripes DO glow on these when the meds are out of the water and I have them under some normal reef lighting...
Right now they are under a standard 40 watt flo bulb from somebody's old kitchen fixture...while in my qt.

Keep us updated on how they do. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that they make it through QT safe and sound. They are notorious for coming down with brook.

I just want to once again emphasize how beautiful these fish actually look in person. I know there are some people looking at this thread thinking "what's so special about these fish??". I've been scouring the internet trying to find a picture that does them justice and I simply can't. You just have to see them in person to see the glow they put out. I get the same warm and fuzzy feeling when looking at a wild caught P. fridmani from the Red Sea or a L. carmabi.

YES ..Project Reef ...MY stinky pics dont do them justice...the color is almost irridescent in person..especially the blue stripe..
You' RE right about the brook...thats why I put 'em in aqua pro cure 1st...It contains formalin and acriflavin...and also -its effective against flukes..I use it on all my clowns with great success !

i have and i'll second that. a lfs had a 3.5"er not too long ago. i know what you're describing re wild caught orchid dottybacks (had and have seen many), and have had those intense coloring occur in tank bred fridmani too. a diet inc. lots of live bristle worms and other reef buggers does it. btw have only come across one candy basslet at a not so local lfs (28years exp.), very disappointing! was big (prob. old) and in bad condition.

project reef : since I have 4 of these (one confirmed pair and 2 singles) I was thinking of something unusual- since its unlikely more of these will come in - pairing the 2 singles with a small tomato clown....what do u think ?
might make for some interesting hybrid offspring?

I agree with this completely. The captive raise Orchid Dottyback have deformities that really put a damper on me when I see these beautiful fish. I really wanted to see a wild caught one, but they are so rare and will never get to Corpus Christi.

If it was me I'd try to pair up the two singles together first, if that didn't work then trying to make a melanopus/frenatus pair would be interesting. Since they're in the same complex it may work out well.

well the 2 remaining singles are close in size...I briefly united them yesterday...and they went at it...
so they will have to be bonded with smaller specimens...
I think they would look awesome with a frenatus mate...
wonder if they would bond?
