RC Pet Peeve

A public forum is a place for discussion. A great place to ask questions, and get answers. When people JUST say "do a search" intelligence is brought into question. I sure as heck don't think the same words would be said if the conversation was in person.

What you have provided a link for imo is not an example of what I am talking about. You gave the guy sound advice, and pointed him in the right direction. Instead of simply saying only "do a search."

I feel like the level of question should be considered when posting, if its somthing most people have gone through (cycling etc..) then search, if its an uncommon occurrence/topic e.g. then by all means post, we all enjoy learning, if we didnt we'd be playing call of duty, or doing some other meaningless time wasting thingy...

Also when non members comment on club forum threads :wavehand: jk lol

And to what was said before about people handing out advice like they're your tanks doctor, see my signature. lol this hobby is special because there are so many methods out there that try to reach the same result, some more efficient then others, and some easier/cost effective then the more efficient, so its wrong to say; "do this cause its what i do, and it WORKS! just look at my tank!" cause what works for one tank, doesn't always work for another.

best way to make forums a useful tool for all; make suggestions** (i.e. this is what i do, and here is why) base on experience and detailed** observation, and dont claim opinion as fact (e.g. algae scrubber replaces skimmer, Im sure there are other examples), because thats when you stop learning.

P.S. the whole my clowns host my anemone....its the anemone that is doing the hosting people. lol

And one more thing! coherence, and punctuation, if i have to reread what some one wrote cause there is not a single punctuation then the thread is getting skipped. Why do i have to guess whether your asking a question? granted im not the best speller, and i dont always capitalize the word at the beginning of a sentence, or occasionally ill fail to use an apostrophe (notice "ill") but at least i got the message across. Inhale** That felt good lol thanks for creating a space this.

Oh can I play? I have a really long list of selling pet peeves.

OOOOH, I got another one!

Has anyone EVER seen a sales thread for a controller package with a DC4 or DC8 and at least 5 people beg them to sell the DC unit separately???

Come on man, just shell out the $20 and buy a new one! This hobby is expensive, bottom line. In reality the difference between $100 used and 120 new isn't that much. Just buy a new one, and move on!

thanks for the reassurance

thanks for the reassurance

a lot of times I have to debate whether or not to give a quick reply, an incomplete reply or no reply at all. I've always found it reassuring when you chime in with all the details that I often gloss over.

I can't agree with this more. It really, really bothers me when people use homophones incorrectly (I know, what's a homophone?). Similarly, the use of contractions such as you're being confused with your. Or their, there, and they're. Also, "a lot" is TWO WORDS!!!!!! thanks.

Yeah, it's a tough balance. I try to give only as much salient detail as I think is needed to assist understanding without being pedantic. I'm not always successful with that.

The folks that irk me just babble on and on often without any real information or some irrelevant information and then when challenged on a fact resort to personal attacks, misrepresentations of other's views, irrelevant analogies and shifting confusing positions. These are people who seem to be more interested in appearing to be right or tough and without real interest in what is actually right . Unfortunately, they ruin a lot of good discussions.

Lack of proper English really gets to me too. Perfect English doesn't have to be used, but at least try. Sentences end in punctuation, and start with a capital letter.

If someone doesn't try to make it easy to read, I don't even try to answer them.

The people who I like to call "The Negative Posters" you know the people who only seem to have negative things to say. The ones who like to slam or bash other people or their ideas.

youguyscrackmeupandivebeenreadingthislaughingtomyself!
Just kidding, thinking if i should go back and read my posts and see how i'm doing!!!

...and now, not reef related....

People who don't give you the "wave" when you let them into traffic.

I agree with a healthy majority of what's been posted. That being said, this place is still the best resource for all things salty IMO.

Also, having been on here for a bit of time, I often tend to not even view threads that I think may annoy me. Judging books (threads) by their covers (titles)?

Yup. Guilty as charged.

I know to be at fault with this. I can be honest with you though, most of this is learned and than quickly forgotten in high school. The internet has jacked up our writing skills and I have fallen into that category. I find myself rereading everything to make sure it's ok and find plenty of mistakes. lol
