Reef Dynamics Skimmers

Yep, still made here in the US. Pumps are usually the only complaint. Some people want the 200 dollar pumps that are out there.

they also offer Eheim pumps for their skimmers, so you can get the best of both worlds. great pump, and made in USA SKimmer.

Thinking about switching to one, anyone have experience with them? How well they work, noise level, and how do they compare to the advertised rating?

I would not oversize them Say a INS 80 on a 55 gallon tank INS 100 75 gallon tank INS 135 120 gallon tank INS 180 150 gallon and up. INS 250 180 gallon and up. So far I have had the 80 and the 180.

Check out these videos: This is the first of a multi-part video series discussing skimmers, featuring Reef Dynamics. (Yes, he grew a beard for the second video. that is the same guy :))

Here is part one of a Bio-Pellet reactor from Reef Dynamics:

I have an ins 80 on a 72 gallon tank wit a 25 gallon sump works great!!! For the price brand new it's ur best bet!!! For 200-300 dollars ur not gonna get a skimmer that pulls more... Comparable to 500 dollar skimmer n up.... There def better skimmers out there but not in this price range

Thanks checked out the videos and learned a few things. I know the euroreef were good skimmers so I assume these are two. My main concern is the noise levels. I have a 375g tank running a Hurricone skimmer which is a beast, but loud when its in the middle of your living room.

I have both the old ER RS80 and the RS100. They are fantastic skimmers. Good price point. They both use the Sedra pump which is still kicking strong after ~6 years. They also pull a good amount of air I believe compared to other common pumps such as the Sicce for the watts. The RS80 and 100 are small enough that they aren't too loud. I can't speak about their larger skimmers.

Moondoggy4 - thanks, I'll do a search through the TOTM threads and see if I can find it.

I have asked this question to Jeff at RD and his response is his pumps are much quieter than the bubble blaster pump the Hurricone uses. I would still like to hear a second opinion from someone other than the manufacturer. Still leaning towards going with a RS INS400 or 450. My Hurricone is awesome and Coral Vue has great quality and customer service, just can't take the noise. I have heard great things about the SRO skimmers which are CV's, but they are almost identical to the hurricone and use the same pump, so that would be a hard sell to my wife.

I have a ER with a bubble blaster pump. I have a old cs 12-2 that I converted to a rc500. The genx4000 nw pumps died on me after about two year of use then I went skimmerless for a while. I didn't want to pay replacement reefdynamics prices for a new pump from RD so I purchased a BB5000NW for about half of what a single Eheim sells for at RD. Is the BB silent? No! I hear a air sucking noise otherwise it's silent!!

I also have a ER rs250 that I again purchased a bb3000nw pump for (purchased skimmer used a few weeks ago) however the pump was or I guess still is defective, hopefully send it to the distributor soon for testing.

Would I buy a Reef Dynamics skimmer in the future?? YES

Do I wish Jeff at RD would use the BubbleBlaster pumps on his skimmers?? YES

I am not totally sold on the cone skimmers.... Jeff & RD's makes great stuff

the hurricone came out before the SRO line. THe BB pump was a option. The normal pump was a askol 1500. it is quiet. THe bb does have a hum. But the askol would be a quiet replacement pump.

The jns sk5 would do well..

But to be on topic the reef dynamic skimmers work just fine are well balanced. I havent quite figured out why the have the exit plumbing the way they do. it takes up a lot of space and isnt needed. The pumps are sedra knock offs and work fine. The eheim is a better pump of coarse. but all around good skimmer.

X2. That is what kept me from puchasing them, as I like the standard body vs. a cone, or cone hybrid as I have with my Octopus SRO's.

Huh? I'm not sure why you say this. My old RS80 and RS100 definitely came with name brand sedra pumps as it's written on the pump itself. Maybe this is something Reef Dynamics changed when they went to the INS line? Not sure.

they use the eco brand version of the sedra/ Same basic pump. Look on there site. you will see.

Yup, got it. That's something they changed when they went to Reef Dynamics. The old ER skimmers used this pump

SP2- Euro-Reef modified SEDRA KSP-3500A water pump

and it looks like the new Reef Dynamics pumps are different. I can't comment on the new pumps but both my old Sedras still work great FWIW to the original poster.
