I think by having it on a stand with the bottom exposed it gets better performance vs being on a flat surface with onlt 1/2" between the pump inlet and the bottom of the sump. JMO

P.S. i only have 4 fish in a 90G tank. So even with a low bioload its pulling all that out.

I went with the RLSS R8-I 8 and managed to get it crammed into my small sump and stand. I can say the RLSS is well built and solid construction. So far it is breaking in and running on setting 5 on the pump in 8 inches of depth on my 210 gallon tank. I see you guys have been doing well with the Reef Octopus, I hope my RLSS turns out as good too.

It seems yours is doing great. Mine I'm still trying to get dialed in. I'm on speed 5 in 7 inches water. I'm still trying to figure out where to set the bubble break.

Yeah I would like to drill some 1/2" holes in my stand I got. Just don't know how easy that would be I wouldn't want to crack it.

Proof is in the puddin. This is in fact skimming better now then My previous skimmer.

I thought to control the amount of air, water, but after about three weeks I have mine on full blast and it is working great.

Could anyone run the skimmer at speed 6 right out of the box? If i run mine above speed 4 the bubble level goes down and its starts to make a gulping sound. I have mine in 6in of water.

I just moved it to 7in water level and i can get it to run at speed 5. It still will not run at speed 6. I wonder if i have something hooked up wrong.

Sounds like to me you are choking the pump. You need to open the gate valve up more and let it break in. You should be able to run in on 6. Dont worry about collecting skimmate for a while.

This DC1 is a really nice skimmer and looks like its going to be a beast. Mine is breaking in hardcore this week and Im getting some black gunk coming now.
