retarded skimmer?

why does my skimmer go from normal to this, and say like this till i turn off and on the skimmer?

the air hose for it is always in the open, the intake for pump is always opene, (maybe a snail blocks it?) but like at night i'll go sleep and its normal, in the morning i'll wake up to loud splashing sounds, and panic think its spilling water onto the floor or something, but its the skimmer over reacting. what the hell is wrong with it?

it goes normal, then starts back up again after an hour or couple hours.

I'd check the air intake and be certain that it is not blocked. Also depending on the pump and such sometimes it will not suck air if it's sittining too low in the water.

Mine is really flaky too. It drives me nuts.

Needlwheel skimmers can be a pain at some time. Make sure you keep the airline and pump cleaned good. They can be really picky and go nuts when some chemicals and fish foods are added to the tank.
