Phosphate Checker
Although I originally believed the phos checker to be of no use to me with its +/- .04 margin of error (my phos runs between .01 and .05 typically) I will have to eat my words.I have had this checker for a few weeks now and enough time to get familiar with it and I am impressed. It gives consistent values when checking the same sample numerous times which leads me to believe there is little if any noise in this instrument.Test kits have never been consistent over several tests on the same sample with as much as 1ppm variance. The variance seems to be about .01 ppm with the Hanna.I believe even with a +/- of .04 the consistency still gives you a good idea of your tank changes over time and can point you to the loss of color or poor health in a given coral.I find it refreshing to know that when my acros loose a bit of color(all other params in range and stable) and my phos is .09 instead of the usual .03 or less ,I need to step up my phos control,ie water changes, gfo, bacteria etc...And if its very low.00 then I can step up on the feedings. And if it is in normal range according to the checker I can look elsewhere.I have noticed a slight loss of color when Phos reaches above .05 acording to the checker.I believe every serious sps keeper should have one of these guys unless you have something better and more accurate then this.

Alk Checker
Love this thing.Very accurate and easy to use with a very small margin of error as far as we are concerned with coral keeping.(+/- 5 ppm).I did 4 tests on same sample and had no variance (DKH)between 3 of these tests with the 4th only being off by .3 ppm.I believe there to be little or no noise for our practical purposes and this is quite contrary to the test kits I frequently used prior .Keeping the big 3)alk,cal and mg) is much easier when you are able to trust your alk readings . if you use a balanced method of supplementation and can test alk accurately and often, you can ignore the other 2 and test mg and cal much more infrequently. This checker is a no brainer for me with it being about twice the cost of a decent kit it becomes very economical once owned for a period of time.

This is a bit different then some of my older posts(no pics) but I just felt some of this info needed to be said by someone!! please feel free to comment. TY

I seldom post in build threads but I must echo your observations on the Hanna Checkers. I absolutely love the ease of use these test offer. I have been using them for the past 2 months to dial my caclium reactor back in after taking it offline due to equipment issues. They have been consistent throughout 30/40 tests. Very simple to use.
I have both the alk and phosphate. I am patiently awaiting the calcium kit.
Exceptional tank.

Thank you for the review. I bought the Hanna Phosphorus checker (which is higher resolution) but have not been able to get consistant results and will be returning it as I believe it is faulty. But a review from an expert SPS reefkeeper certainly is useful. ;)

Dan

thanks for your feedback on the checkers - I think I'm going to go ahead and order the alk checker. I'm still debating on the Po4 as I just don't check it that often.

I agree Dan....the Alk Checker is the bomb. Best hobby grade test kit to date for me. I have the Phos Checker and like that too. Only bummer is I wish I waited and bought the Ultra Low Phos version. I get between .02 and .07 on the last two months of use.

Specifically regarding the Phos Checker...a quick tip. I rinse the vial in tank water just prior to testing, and dump that tank water, and the begin the test. Just in case there is rp/di water (after cleaning) and/or older tank water residue in the vial. Don't know if needed, but that is what I do. I run the Alk Checker straight out of the box each time.

re the phos checker i have had this for a year or so (whenever they first came out) and i usually run 3 tests and average the results if i have a variance (which is rarely more than 0.01 over the 3)

i also got the alk checker with the pre order and i always get the same results with my 3 tests, the liquid solution is so easy and quick to use. I also agree with the frequency of checking the alk and mag and cal, but only once your system is stable and balanced.

Dan....

In regard to your Radiums on an sps tank, how long do you run your Radiums before you switch them out? Also, with this Radium import issue, what bulb may you consider if we can not get Radiums anymore?

BTW: your frags are doing awesome and most all fully encrusted over the plugs and now on the rock. Now they should jump fast once encrusting has fully established.

Many thanks......

I have run them a year with no real visual colr loss ay least to the eye but I changed them at 10 months this latest time.

I dont know of another bulb at the moment of Radium becomes un available but aqua connect and helios are both bulbs that I liked in the past.FYI I was assured Radium has the proper documents in place now and it will not be long before the shipment is released so I do not think they will become unavailable like some have reported

Thank you Dan for posting your experiences with Radiums and the update.....ordered Phoenix and will install tomorrow. I could not wait much longer. So will have to run them until I can get a hold of Radiums. I heard something similar that the major US distributor where all the online companies get their Radiums from is in Germany right now trying to fix the importing issue.....fingers crossed.

Many thx.....

Yes its true.I spoke o a very large distributor of lamps and they tell me it will be available very soon.Permits are filed

FYI the phoenix is very close to Radium in color and par when new if ran on the same electronic ballast,ie ARO
I have done par testing and ran one next to a Radium on a frag tank for some time.Problem I se with them is at 3 to 4 months they go white or yellow and loose the actinic spike we are looking for.If you replace them often they are very comparable to Radium, just a shorter life.

How big is that clam?!

about 19 inches and I have had it for 16 plus years.started as a 4 inch clam

dan...can you tell me what the third sps is in post #709....thanks!

That is the ORA Perlberry.very colorful at the new growth tips and more greenish on the older growth not visible in the macro shot
