Ritteri anemone

Blue spot

Member
Hi everyone. Hoping someone can help me with this. I have had a ritteri anem for over 2 years , always looked healthy and has grown significantly. For this reason I wanted to add another anem to the other end of my tank, a yellow one. My Lfs managed to get one for me . However , when I took it home it was already gaping and not looking the best, normally I would not buy something like this but as my Lfs got it for me specifically I did not like to leave it. I tried my best with it but after about 2 weeks of being more or less permanently deflated and gaping it started to disintegrate and I got it out the tank. This however is not my problem. Ever since this incident the anem I have had for 2 years has started to do the same. My water quality is in the normal ranges I have changed my carbon and phos remover and completed a 10 % water change. Still no improvement. It inflates for a dat then sulks for a day. Anyone have any ideas ?. I am worried their is some sort of infection I have baught in from the other nem, I also have bubble tips which are unaffected. Please help ??

You should read the sticky above regarding cipro treatment and QT for new nems, ritteri/mag being high on the list of need for that.
So the new nem infected your existing.
I would not take your time in getting it QT'd and treatment.
That's terrible to have happen when you had it so long, good luck.

Thanks Dave , where do I find this sticky, I was looking to see if it was possible for some sort of infection but couldn't find anything , thought it was too coincidental , double checked my water but looks fine so thought it must be something like this. Yes it reacts when touched and its feeding, it also has 3 anemone crabs and 2 clowns living in the nem so I was hoping they might care for it in some way . I have yet again learned another lesson I knew I shouldn't have added the other nem, especially as I have no quarantine facility.

+1 on it being infected and infecting your existing mag.

Here is the link just in case you couldn't find it.

By the way, was the yellow mag completely yellow like this one:

That is one of my favorites, so just wondering if another popped up. It doesn't seem to be imported as frequently as other colors... :(

Good luck with your treatment by the way!

Oh and just FYI, keep positive, the treatment is very affective and not too difficult to do, it has saved a great many mags/ritteri's and has made what was once an extremely difficult nem to aquire healthy and keep a now much more successful task.
Yours is pretty textbook, at least you know what's up and what to do.
Again, good luck.

Anemone can get infected and passed the infection on to another anemone of the same species (more likely) or to another anemone of a different species (less likely).
I have had this happened to me before. Two healthy Magnifica that got infected and died when I added a third Magnifica that was sick.
I would follow the treatment thread at the top of this forum. Follow the direction there and hope for the best. Best of luck.
New anemone need to be quarantine before adding to a system that house other healthy anemones.

Thanks folks. And josh don't show me that picture !! It's this picture that started all the problems . I saw this and though what a beautiful looking anemone mine is bright purple with white tips and thought this would be a nice contrast. This is the exact picture I gave to my Lfs . Then mine arrived rather sad and bleached, but I figured I may be able to bring it back from the brink.... What an ego I have ! Lol

Sorry! :( They are definitely beautiful, I would get your purple one healthy again and have your LFS get you another yellow one. Now you know about QTing new anemones just in case so it should be no problem since you've had success up until now. Best of luck, it should respond well to treatment if it hasn't been showing signs very long.

That was my anemone. RIP. I lost him and a Red base Magnifica when a added a Magenta tipped Magnifica without QT. That third Magnifica was new imported looking very healthy at the store the day it arrived. The color was so beautiful, and it look so healthy that I just added him directly into my system. He was costly, both in term of money because he was beautiful and the LFS owner know that I collected rare color Magnifica, and emotionally costly for me because I lost two very beautiful and healthy Magnifica because of his infection.

I've just though what di I do with all the things living in the nem. They are gonna freak when I take it out the tank! Clowns never leave it.

No way Orion, that was a stunning nem , personally I think it was the nicest one I've seen on the net. You must have been gutted , I would have been , I'm flapping over mine, but after 2 years I'm rather attached to it.

Agreed. I won't be happy until I have a healthy one. :p

Yes thanks Orion . I have just finished reading it properly. I always have a small panic in the beginning of a problem and read half of everything. I've just spent a good half an hour reading and have plans to go and buy a small qt tank tomorrow. God knows how I am going to sneak it into the house without being questioned about "will you not be happy until our entire house is filled with water " lol :). The other thing I found interesting is classifying , is my anemone sick ! And after reading , I'm not sure, I still feel sulking is the proper word at the moment, normally it is always fully inflated reaching for the top of the tank. Now it's sort of half inflated and lolling , just lazy looking really . Is it sick ?
