Rose Anemone Died by vortex!

A healthy anemone can definitely get sucked into a MP40. It all depends on the position, and very rarely has anything to do with the health of the specimen.

a healthy anemone, should not get sucked into a MP40 to begin with ...

Any anemone can get sucked into a powerhead, especially during the acclimation period. If it wants to go for a walk to find a different place, it can easily fall off the rock and float into one.

sorry guys ... but a healthy anemone, wouldnt "Fall" off rock and get sucked into a power head.

just as a healthy anemone in ocean wont get carried away in currents.

same goes for fish ... a healthy fish, can fight off any current, and wont get sucked by a PH ... a sick fish, or a weaker one, might.

During acclimation period .... okay sure ... but I Always put my power heads in feed mode when introducing a new specimen.

of course, my personal opinion and experience could be wrong :)

A fully healthy anemone can/will start to move around the tank (( or in the case of an E. Quad let go of the rock )) if any tank conditions change -- that wouldn't make the anemone unhealthy.

I have seen it numerous times, something changes in the tank (( moving a powerhead a couple of inches )) and an otherwise healthy anemone moved.

BTAs are E. Quad as well right ? sorry, Im very bad with scientific names :S

I too have seen them move ... with changes such as flow, lighting and .. .
I have even had anemones hold on the glass, by a MP40 ... but never got sucked in ... [I know I can not draw a conclusion from my case alone ... as I might have got lucky.... ]

but I have also seen anemones move, due to Water quality changes [for the worse] weakening the anemone's health, to a point it can not hold its foot, and gets sucked in a power head ....

so I should re-state, that my Experience, may not be adequate to draw a general conclusion :)

I haven't seen a healthy anemone get sucked clear off a rock or glass by a pump, that I would agree is impossible with a healthy specimen. If you have ever tried to pry one off a rock you will understand why lol.

What I have seen is they will walk close enough, and then extend their tentacles far enough to get tangled/chopped up by the intake flow. This may or may not lead to the anemone releasing from where it is anchored.

YAP ! lol just last week was trying to give my BTA to my parents tank ... ended up giving my dad the whole rock it was on LOL so I hear you :)

this sounds very possible !
my BTA was about 2" away form a mp40 once ... if that was a LTA ... the tenticles would have been chopped off, so yea I can see how that would happen :)

Just moved my livestock from my old 180 to my new 90 gallon rimless and had the very same issue. I placed his old rock next to some new liverock. He appearred to be completely on the new rock, but had a slight hold on the old rock. I removed the piece of old liverock and he seemed fine, but later let go and after I walked away he had been pulled into my MP40. Despite being in the powerhead for about 20 minutes most likely, he suffered very little damage. This was Tuesday and he has looked perfectly health the last two days. I only had the vortech running at about 25%, so I'm sure it helped. Now I have the foam cover that came with the pump installed to prevent it from happening again.

The anemone was very healthy. Water conditions were excellent. I saw a trail on the gravel bed from the island where I suspect he walked over to get to the glass. I don't think he just destuck himself off the rock and floated near the vortech.

Unfortunately, my GBTA met a similar demise last night. He had been moving around a bit during the day, looking extremely healthy (Great color, nicely bubbled, feeding well), and he seemed to settle toward the bottom of one of the rocks last night. Woke up to him inside pump's intake tube, really bummed about it.

Won't be trying another anemone until I have a tank with an overflow.

From what I've read, yep, it's pretty common. My first (and only) anemone met up with a maxi jet, which I thought was way too weak to cause any harm. I woke up to a tank that looked like it was filled with milk. Water changes and carbon saved everything else. I'm sorry for your loss.

My BTA's never really wandered, except when they were splitting, or unhappy with conditions.

If you've moved things around, you have an anemone thats living in unsuitable conditions. Thats functionally the same as unhealthy.

Please, an anemone that doesn't like a change in flow does not make it unhealthy. If you sit in a lumpy chair, does that somehow change your physiology, or just make you want to move to a seat that that is more comfortable?

lol so harsh lol

maybe unhealthy is not the correct term :) but if I was sitting in a chair, and its springs broke, making it uncomfy ... Id get up, and move to another chair ... I wouldnt fall off the chair and roll towards another chair :)

what I mean is ... a happy [due to lack of words lol ] anemone would walk to another location, rather than letting go of the rock, and hope current would take it to a suitable place. after all, one of the sights on a healthy anemone, is one that attaches its foot ! so one that doesnt attach its foot is .....
