SaraB's 183G Rimless AGE Downgrade

Thanks Ed for the recommendation! Justin is coming by and will have me break out my Par Meter that's still new in the box after 3 years ;)

Got confirmation that the fixture is on its way here from Toronto!

hey Sara, holy crap. amazing planning and out of the world tank. that took a lot of patience and a lot of experience to get a tank setup like that. i want one, :-)

Nice build. Tank's looking good. I really like the white sand, did you go with the miniflakes and do you find that it stays in place for the most part? Also, how many pounds did you end up going with for your tank? Scape looks very natural.

Thanks! I just about lost my patience a few times, but nothing happens fast in this hobby ;)

Thank you. Yes, I did go with the miniflakes and I am having a bit of an issue keeping it down where the return flow bounces off the front pane. I really don't want to dial back my flow either. I also have not added all of the sand I had ordered yet, so I should really try and stack up a couple inches of it along the front and see if it holds down better rather than the thin layer that keeps blowing back. I had ordered up 4 bags (120 pounds) and I still have 1 bag yet to add ... and I also replaced the sand in my 45G 2x2 cube with it as well.

Good to hear, thanks. I hope it works out for you. You could always play with your powerhead and move them around a bit to help. Maybe the ph's on the sides would help out rather than back to front?

Hey Sara,

So uumm ... when are you gonna be back in Toronto again? You're missing out all the local shipments over here ... :eek2:!

Can't believe you're still going strong ... like the Energizer rabbit huh? May the Force be with You ...:D

I do have 1 Vortech on the back left pane and the other on the right side pane. It's most likely the combo of my return and 1 Vortech moving that sand. I messed with my return early this week and I just need to put some more sand down to see what happens.

I know, I know! I don't see a return trip for work in my future, but maybe in the fall I can convince the hubby to head up to Lake Niagra and stop along the way and visit you and Peter.

Yep, I keep going and going in this hobby :bounce1:

Look what arrived today!!! It's Fragile ... makes me think of the movie The Christmas Story ... Look, it's Italian Fra-gi-le

Too bad it's going to have to wait to get hung after vacation as I have yet to receive my light fixture holder/rack.

:celeb3: Woo-hoo!

Just getting caught back up...great progress Sara. I really like the new aquascape. I'll be interested to hear your experience with the mini-flakes. I've always been a oolite guy but have always had the shifting problem. It gets better as the sand ages but it still shifts. Hopefully the mini-flakes stay in place and maybe I'll use it when I get my display back up.

Now let's see some picts of the fixture :hammer:

I'll keep you posted on that sand Dan. I still have to add that last bag and I'll do so when I get back from vacation.

I also got news this morning that my light rack was to ship out today! Here's more pics of the fixture for you Dan!

Very nice Sara, that's gonna be super sexy when it's up and running

So I'm pretty particular about some things and my light rack paint job was not making me happy. The silver paint color I chose apparently reacted with the clear coat and it came in all bubbly and pitted ... so I sanded them last night and got a coat of primer on one side already today. The one black piece they did came in perfect, so I know it was a reaction with the 2 paints :( Hopefully I can have this finished up with painting tomorrow and it can go up on Thursday.

So I heard back from the makers of the light rack that the paint was suppose to be textured as it then hides any imperfections from the welding of the pieces together. Oh well, I'll have a smooth finish on it now I guess. Overall, it's a very heavy duty light rack that I can't wait to get installed!

Here's some of the equipment pictures I promised a few weeks ago ...
