Scott's 270 aka Project Mayhem

I thought things would get a little crazy after taking your pellets off line as it would throw your tank back into a "mini" cycle. As you know, the biopellets also host a significant amount of beneficial bacteria. Are you seeing more algae growth or a green film on your glass with the Mitras?

The clamps!!! How are the clamps working out?

Actually my tank seems to be doing better off it. Obviously I don't have a lot of evidence that it was the bio-pellets causing the algae. There is less algae on the rocks and the sand and the same amount on the glass. My lights are dialled back up to 65% total output now. (up from 50%).

The clamps are working as they should! No corrosion, no popping off from the manifold. I get rest filled sleeps now :)

Glad to know things are looking even better. Thanks for the input on the clamps. I was about to pull the trigger on the RD3 return pump but pushed the pause button when they announced a Profilux controlled version coming soon. Like you, I'll be using a piece of nylon tubing to connect to my return plumbing. While my connections will be above the water line I will feel a lot better using clamps that are a LOT less likely to oxidize.

I asked about the algae on the glass because I noticed that I had to clean my glass a lot more when I switched to the Mitras. Before I was using 5 Ai Sol Blue's and would only have to clean the glass weekly. With both sets of LED's P03 levels remained between 0.01-0.03 (Hanna). I guess it's something in the new light spectrum causing it? Growth has never been better so I'm not complaining. :)

Scott, what are your thoughts on using a UV sterilizer? I'm about to set up a small 40 gallon tank but don't really plan on using it as a quarantine system. Including my sump I am probably running a little more than 200g (170 display and 30-40 sump) I was thinking about adding UV to control any unwanted parasites. Again, what do you think?

Rodney, the Mitras are the first LED's I have used. My old T5's would grow algae on the glass as well so I don't really notice any difference in algae growth rates on the glass so far. My Hanna P03 test showed 0.00 this morning :) I am running a small amount of GFO.

From my understanding UV sterilizers are better for virus/bacteria/algae control than ozone due to the contact time with the ozone in the reactor. Most UV lamps have a longer contact time within the reactor from what I've read. I am not using ozone as a preventative system, but as one that aids in water clarity.

Hey there, off topic but how is reptilia? It looks pretty cool!

Reptilia was fun! It was one of the nicer set of enclosure we have seen (compared to our local pet stores). The hot snakes were neat. And the actual pet store on the backside of the tour had some great critters. I have always been a sucker for Dendrobates!

Cheers,
Scott

Haahaa does anyone else feel like a drug dealer when they are working on the tank? Breaking Bad blue crystal anyone?

We also moved the freshwater tank back into the basement now that the reno is pretty much done :)

And here it is in context to the big tank :) Please excuse the poor image quality.

Thanks All :) My "cyano/whatever you want to call it" problem is much better now. I am going to dial my lights back up a couple % at a time and see what happens!

I've been thinking about this for a while and have finally made my decesion. Scott, provided you also have a TV in visual range of the DT I'm running away from home and decided to live in your basement. I'll bring my own helmet and will treat the Aprilia and tank as if it were my very own.

No seriously, glad to hear things are working out well and the cyano is on its way out. You have to bust out that DSLR and spoil us with some more pics.

Haahaa! I wanted to put a second TV over the freshwater tank as well but Wendy said that's a little excessive :) Just remember the riding season here is only from May to October and we lack anything called a corner on our roads. Great for straight line speed… but that gets boring quick. I have to drive west to have fun lol!

I will take the camera out today and post some shots tonight for you!

Cheers,
Scott

Ok you asked for pictures and you shall receive :) I will post side shots with top shots when possible.
